Orvis McRae Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapelwood Funeral Home - Nash on Jan. 14, 2026.
Orvis W. McRae, 91 of Texarkana, Texas passed away Monday, January 12, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.

Orvis was born February 18, 1934, in Texarkana, Texas on what is now the munitions company D&Z.

After the 9th grade he went to work on the farm to help his family. Soon after he got a job working for AF James driving a truck. He later retired after 39 years from Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant in the transportation department. Even though he was 'retired' he didn't know how not to work. So, he graced New Boston Concrete with his presence, working faithfully for them for several years, well into his 80's. He loved telling old stories of where he was born and how he grew up. He often talked about picking cotton, that they had little growing up, but how they made the most of it. He recalled his truck driving experiences that took him around the country also.

Orvis loved music, and boy was he great at it! He was a self-taught guitar player and singer and played every chance he got. He was the opening act on big stages for such names as Johnny Cash, June Carter, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, and Porter Wagner. He was the MC of several other concerts and talent shows, even introducing Shoji Tabuchi.

He later used his musical talent to sing Gospel music at countless revivals & events across the four states area. Even recording a couple of records and CDs (which we played for him through his transition)

Orvis was proud to use his talents and sing for the Lord and proud of being a Christian. He led music for several churches that spanned over 60yrs. Including Everett Baptist, Hiland Hills, Sylverino and most recently Ogden Baptist, from which he retired after 25 years of service.

He sure put together a great resume to be accepted into Gods choir!

He enjoyed playing golf & games with family and friends every chance he could. As most everyone who met him would say, he loved joking around and laughing. He made friends easily and enjoyed spending time with them and would help anyone in need. He especially enjoyed praying and eating meals together as a family over the years. He will be missed more than words can express.

Orvis was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Kathlene; parents Robert & Inez McRae; two sisters; Sharon Mauldin, Birdie Freeman; a son David McRae & a stepdaughter Terrye.

Survivors include two daughters; Pamela McRae Earls; Crystal McRae Williams and a son-in-law he thought the world of Jordan Williams; (often referred to as his favorite child); a brother; Aubrey McRae (Gayle).

6 grandchildren, Shannon McRae, Kathy Carder, Gabriel McRae, Michael Carder, Lacy Davis, Colton Davis; 16 great-grandchildren. A very special friend dearly loved, who always brightened his day; Dorothy Sagers.

Extended family; Faye Landgraf, Moja Raffaelli, JH Higgs (Jo) and many other family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to "Prime Hospice" for the love and care they have displayed.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Chapelwood Funeral Home, on Kings Hwy from 5:00-7:00 PM.
