Otis Lavern Collier, Sr, age 92, a native of Bayou La Batre passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at his home in Irvington, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Idell Collier; one brother, Wayne (Yvonne) Collier; one sister Eleanor (Denny) Penny.
He is survived by his devoted and cherished wife of 70 years, Winona Collier; his two sons, Otis (Joy) Collier and Richard (Shauna) Collier; four grandchildren, Tarah Fleming, Katelyn Collier, Branden (Lindsey) Collier and Dallas (Haley) Collier; two great grandchildren, Bristol Fleming and Emma Grace Collier; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Otis graduated from Alba high school in Bayou La Batre, Alabama in 1949. At the age of 19 he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. Otis advanced to staff sergeant while in the Marines and saw combat action against North Korean forces during the Korean War. After he was discharged from the Marines, he married Winona Seaman. They were married for 70 years upon his passing.
Following his time in the Marine Corps he became a boat captain providing supplies and materials to oil rigs offshore for more than 25 years. Upon his retirement from the shipping industry, he became an avid shrimper and oysterman. During his spare time, he enjoyed photography and some fishing. He also helped his son Richard remodel homes and build several boats including one he finished at age 85.
Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Rd, on August 14, 2024, from 11AM-12PM (immediate family beginning at 10AM). Chapel service will start at 12PM followed by a graveside service at Oddfellows Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Branden Collier, Dallas Collier, Earl Wayne Collier, David Seaman, Paul Sprinkle, Glenn Alexander.
