Owen Lee Johnson

It is with both sadness and admiration that we announce the passing of Owen Lee Johnson, who departed this world on December 15, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on January 14, 1940, in Norfolk, Virginia, Owen was a steadfast presence in his community, known for his unwavering kindness and commitment to embodying the principles of the Golden Rule.

Owen spent the entirety of his life in Norfolk, a place he cherished deeply. As a talented chef at the Navy Exchange, he brought joy and comfort to countless people over the years through his culinary talents and warm, friendly demeanor. For Owen, cooking was not just a profession but an expression of love-a way to bring people together and nurture the bonds that make life meaningful.

A dedicated member of the Golden Rule Club, Owen fervently believed in and practiced the philosophy of doing right by others. This principle guided him throughout his life, reflected in his generous spirit and unfailing integrity. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and compassion, inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to being a devoted friend and pillar of his community, Owen was a loving father. He is survived by his beloved son Michael and Michael's partner Sharon, who were a constant source of pride and joy for him. Owen is also remembered with affection by many friends and neighbors who became like family over the years.

Owen's parents, Hattie Sanford and Walter Johnson, preceded him in death, but he carried their lessons and love forward in all that he did, ensuring their legacy lived on through his actions and values.

He is survived by his children Michael (Sonya) and Anita; grandchildren, Darnell, Brittany, Christina, Darshawn, Taylor, Antione, Michael, Jr., Mitchell and Brandon.

Though Owen passed away of natural causes, his indomitable spirit and infectious optimism will continue to live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and generosity that will be felt for generations to come.

A celebration of Owen's extraordinary life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and the lasting impact he made on the world around him. Until that time, we are left to reflect on his remarkable journey and how he enriched our lives immeasurably simply by being himself.

Owen Lee Johnson will be deeply missed but fondly remembered, his life a brilliant example of how living with love and respect for others can truly change the world.

His daughter, Anita, gave these thoughtful words as a form of tribute to her unending love for her father:

My Dear Daddy words cannot explain the love I have in my heart for you right now at this moment. I know you're in a better place at peace, no more pain your with your family. You were the best father ever until the end and I will miss hearing your laughter and cracking up at my jokes. I will always carry you with me Daddy and I will miss you for the rest of my life. You will always be my shinning star Daddy now and forever I love you Daddy. Rest in peace My Daddy!
