George Phillips Obituary

George Lawrence Phillips, born on November 23, 1935, in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away at his residence in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on February 25, 2026, at the age of 90.

He worked as a Longshoreman serving the Port of Norfolk and later served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Longshoremen's Association. His dedication and commitment to the ILA was unwavering, and he remained deeply engaged in that profession for many years. George attended college courses at Old Dominion University and actively pursued continuing education in support of his role at the ILA.

George served in the military as did all his brothers and his father before him. He was a Korean War Army Veteran.

George was a kind and gentle man of faith and musical talent. He had a profound love for church music, both at home and at worship service. He served as an organist for a number of churches in the area and was a member at the First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Henry A. Phillips and Nora Starke, brothers, Henry Arthur Phillips Jr., Doug Phillips, and Richard Phillips. His memory will be cherished by his surviving brother, Jack W. Phillips Sr. of Yorktown, Virginia.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 17, at 3:00 p.m. at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd., Suffolk, VA. Family and friends are invited to share memories and offer condolences at www.altmeyerfh.com.
