Palma DeSarro Obituary

Palma (Urino) DeSarro, 104, went to her eternal home to join her husband, Tony, on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford.

Palma was born in Utica, on March 20, 1921, a daughter of the late Francesco and Anna (Branco) Urino. She was educated in local schools and a member of the first graduation class of T.R. Proctor High School in 1940. On July 20, 1946, Palma was joined in marriage to Anthony ""Zume"" DeSarro. They shared 44 loving years of marriage, devoting their lives to their family, their God and their church. Her beloved Tony passed away on August 5, 1990.

An extraordinary woman, with great determination, even during WWII, Palma wanted to do her part and was told she was too young, but, she went to Rome Air Base and told them she would not leave until they put her to work. She worked there throughout the war and for several years after.

In later years, she was the senior typist at Oneida County Social Services, where she worked for over 16 years.

A lifelong devoted parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel, Palma is one of the last of a very special generation. Palma and Tony were involved in all church activities. She was a member of the St. Anne Society, the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Society, the Mother's Guild, the Busy Bodies Club and the Christ Child Society. She was a money counter at church, worked the church festival for many years, was a member of the Social Committee at Mt. Carmel and brought Communion to shut-ins. In addition, she was active in the DeSarro Card Club, the Red Hat Society and the Democratic Woman's Club and held office in most of these organizations.

Palma was an excellent cook and baker. Her desserts were legendary. She was a voracious reader, a killer Scrabble player and avid card player. A special thanks to the girls from Fishers Landing who would often give up their days off to travel to Utica and spend time visiting and playing cards with Palma.

A truly special person, we thought she would be here forever, she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Palma is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lucille and Joseph Amerosa, Francine DeCondo, Mary Ellen and Charles ""Skip"" Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Christian DeSarro; beloved grandchildren, Joseph (Danielle) Amerosa, Matthew (Jessica) Amerosa, Jason (Evie) Amerosa, Danielle (Michael) Hance, Andrea DeCondo, Joseph (Arity) DeCondo, Anne Marie (Ziv) Smith, Michael (Shanna) Smith, Anthony (Ilene) DeSarro, Ronald (Heather) DeSarro and Brianne (PJ) Ficcaro; beloved great-grandchildren, Riely and Rocco Amerosa, Luca Hance, Emilia, Annabelle, Tressa and Joseph DeCondo, Max and Matthew Konsens, John and Dominic DeSarro and Brooke Ficcaro; and also many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, with special mention of the family of the late Tony Pellegrino, his wife, Dee, Renee and John, Lisa and Ed, Anthony and Heidi and their kids, all of whom were very special to Palma.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Joseph DeCondo; three brothers and one sister, Nicholas (Marie) Urino, Anna (Ronald) Butts, Michael Urino and Marco Urino; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joseph and Lucy DeSarro; and brothers-in-law and sisters–in-law, Carmen and Florence DeSarro, Frances and Leonard Grassi, Rose DeSarro and Theresa Dupra; and a special nephew and niece, Joseph DeSarro and Julie Barr.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 10 a.m., from St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Private entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.

The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers on the Bourbon Street Unit at the Presbyterian Home, who went above and beyond for their ""Grandma Palma"" and her family during her stay.

God loved your mom and shared her with all of us for years! Growing up memories will always include Palma. ....and may I say, she made the best, biggest meatballs, I remember. Since we all hung out at each other's houses, we were always just like one of the family. Such awesome memories of when we were kids that we all have. My prayers are with you and all the family during this sad time, but how lucky you are to have had her around for so long. What a lady!!......
