Pamela Gene Steen Horton, aged 78, passed peacefully Saturday, July 26 at her home, Wesley Meadows Senior Services, in Hernando, Mississippi from dementia related symptoms. Pam was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on August 27, 1946, to her parents Lloyd Whitman Steen, crop-duster, and Pauline Opal Lacy Steen, homemaker. Pam was the eldest of four siblings – Lynda, David and Kathy. She was blessed to grow up in Georgetown, Mississippi close to grandparents, aunt, uncles, cousins and a huge assortment of extended family. On family holidays, the Steens would head to Wyoming to visit the other grandparents and extended family. In high school, Pam's family relocated to Leland, MS where she nished school and performed as majorette for the Leland high school band. An accomplished musician, Pam played the piano, pipe organ for the Baptist Church in Georgetown, and the accordion.
After high school, Pam attended Delta State University for a year, then went to work in Greenville, where she met the love of her life, Mike Horton. They married in July 1967 and lived in Columbus for Mike to nish his degree at MSU where they ran the very rst Mr.
Quick convenience store. After graduation they returned to Indianola where they made their home for over 50 years. Pam worked as a secretary at many companies in the delta until her retirement – Lewis Grocer Co./Supervalu, Delta Pride Cat sh and Delta Wildlife to name a few. She was also a member of the Mid Delta Credit Union Board of Directors for many years.
Pam and Mike raised their two daughters, Lacy and Michael, in Indianola. Pam was greatly involved in their activities and could always be found cheering them along in their endeavors. Pam was extremely close to her mom, Polly, and stepdad, Bud, her siblings, in-laws, and all her nieces and nephews. Every holiday meant stops at several family members' homes or hosting everyone at hers. Pam was a collector of people. If she liked you, she loved you and treated you like family. She was the life of any party and loved to socialize. Any weekend you could nd them on the houseboat on Lake Ferguson, surrounded by family and friends. The Greenville Yacht Club was a great part of their life for over 40 years.
Pam was a wonderful Gigi to her 7 grandchildren. She loved to spoil them rotten with special meals, gifts and homemade blankets that she made each of them, but especially with her time.
In her later years, Pam developed dementia and fought it until the very end. After Mike's death in 2020, she moved to Wesley Meadows Retirement Facility in 2021 to be closer to her daughter, Lacy.
Pam is survived by her daughters Lacy (Jeff) Tollison of Holly Springs, Mississippi, and Michael Orsak of El Campo, Texas; grandchildren Lizzie Tollison, Anna Griffin Tollison, Ruthie Tollison, Aubrey Orsak, William Orsak, Abigale Orsak and Wesley Orsak; sisters, Lynda (Don) Yule, Kathryn Steen; brother, David (Deborah) Steen, in-laws Bill and Lisa Horton, Beky (Carl) Street and Linda Horton; and best friends, Linda and Charles Davis.
She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather; granddaughter, Grace Taylor Tollison; and nephew Keith Lloyd Verner.
The family wishes to thank the team at Wesley Meadows in Hernando for the excellent care and love that Pam received during the four and a half years she made that her home. The family asks that any memorials made in her name go to Wesley Meadows, 1325 McIngvale Rd, Hernando, MS 38632.
All friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life service Thursday, August 7th at 2:00 at Indianola First Methodist Church, with visitation from 1-2:00. Son-in-law, Rev. Jeff Tollison will officiate the service. Honorary pallbearers are David Steen, Steve Verner, Don Yule, Bill Horton, Charles Davis and Ben Horton. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
