Pascual Zapien Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Lynden on Dec. 8, 2025.
Pascual H. Zapien of Sumas, Washington passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, December 5, with his beloved wife by his side. He was 85 years old.
Born in Worland, Wyoming on June 20, 1940, Pascual grew up surrounded by the love of his parents, Manuel and Sarah Zapien and 8 siblings. He met the love of his life, Elojia Aurora Abitia (Dora), and together they began a journey that would span nearly seven decades. Pascual and Dora were married on May 12, 1958, in Bellingham and settled in Sumas, Washington, where they built a home filled with love and laughter.
Pascual and Dora raised seven children: Dan (Trish) Zapien, Barb (Jim) Taubenheim, Ray (Carmen) Zapien, Mike (Deanna) Zapien, Dave (Stephanie) Zapien, Jamie (Darcey) Zapien, and Lisa (Nate) Baldwin. His family grew to include 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Pascual's greatest happiness came from watching his children and grandchildren thrive-whether on the playing field, in their careers, or in their families. He celebrated their accomplishments and cherished the love they shared for one another.
Pascual was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Sarah Zapien; his siblings Manuel, Helen, Robert, Francis, Ray, and Celeste; his daughter, Lisa Baldwin; and his daughter-in-law, Carmen Zapien. Though his passing leaves a deep void, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Dora; his children Dan, Barb, Ray, Mike, Dave, and Jamie; his sister, Virginia Abitia; his brother, Jimmy Zapien; as well as 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren who will continue to honor his legacy.
A man of many passions, Pascual loved sports and could often be found cheering on his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time at the casino, but above all, he treasured moments with his wife and family. His devotion to Dora was unwavering, and his love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. To Pascual, family meant everything.
Pascual's legacy is one of love, resilience, and devotion. He will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend whose life was defined by the bonds he nurtured and the joy he found in those closest to him.
The Rosary will be Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass is planned for the next day, Thursday December 18th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. All are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
