PASQUALE OPPEDISANO Obituary

OPPEDISANO, Pasquale "Pat". Lifelong resident of Arlington, Massachusetts, died peacefully at 96, of natural causes on April 15, 2024, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Pat was known to residents of Arlington, notably as owner of Decatur Market between 1960 and 1993 - a vital part of East Arlington, especially the area formally known as "the Acre". Son of Rosario and Giuseppina (Panetta); devoted husband of Elizabeth (Aucoin) (68 years); beloved father of Janet and husband, Steven O'Riordan of Arlington, Stephen and wife, Jeannine of Arlington and David of London, England; dearly loved grandfather of Caroline and husband, Ryan Shreves, Conor and John O'Riordan. Brother of the late Marie Bugden, Frances (Fran), Lee, Adeline, Dominic and Charles; and surviving sisters, Amelia (Amy) Oppedisano of Winchester and Virginia Giurleo of Arlington; and a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. Touchdown Club president, Boston Retail Grocers Association president, Sam Nigro Charitable Scholarship Trust president, Massachusetts Food Association executive board member and Hall of Fame recipient, member of the Singing Grandpops (of the Retired Men's Club of Arlington) and for more than 50 years, member of both Knights of Columbus Arlington Council 109 and Arlington Sons of Italy 1349 (also president of the latter). World War II Navy veteran and Korean War veteran. Also a former Arlington Town Meeting member. He was a faithful fan of the New England Patriots, baseball icon Joe DiMaggio and trumpeter and band leader Harry James, whom he "booked" locally (including Arlington High School) to perform on four occasions as scholarship fund-raisers. He amassed a collection of more than 500 of James's recordings and was personally invited to his funeral in Las Vegas, which he attended. His unwavering good nature and disposition, generosity of spirit, sunny outlook and contributions to the community surely will be missed. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 19 2024, at 12 noon, at St. Eulalia, 50 Ridge St., Winchester. The Mass will be Streamed, via the St. Eulalia website, Live Stream at sainteulalia.org. A Wake will be held at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., ARLINGTON, on Thursday, April 18, between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, a donation to local food pantry Arlington Eats would be welcome.

Growing up in the Project in East Arlington many of us had no cars and very limited incomes. There were no Food Stamps back then and no food pantries. Don't know what we would have done without Pat and Decatur Market. His cheerfulness was always a great blessing to me when I went to the store for my Mom. Heaven has gained a truly amazing man.

Pat was the best of the best. A childhood friend of my brothers Warren and Nish Nahigian, who grew up together sharing many things including owning their own grocery stores, one the Decatur Market and the others the Monument Market. Pat is the last of the Arlington independent grocer who did so much for so many quietly and with compassion. Rest in Peace our good friend.

I have such fond memories of discussing Harry James and the Beatles with Pat. He and Elizabeth were my adopted family during college and the whole family are among my favorite people. Pat´s chipper and kind personality is already dearly missed. May his loved ones be comforted by his beautiful memory.
