Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shaw Funeral Home - Leedey on Jan. 2, 2025.
Patsy Ellen (Patterson) Murphy, third child of H.O. 'Buck' Patterson and Naomi (Wysong) Patterson was born May 27,1945 in Arnett, Oklahoma. She grew up on the family ranch on Turkey Creek southeast of Harmon and lived her entire life in Western Oklahoma. Pat was an outdoor girl, riding a horse at an early age, and she enjoyed doing her share of cowboy work alongside her dad and brother. Her love for horses and the sport of rodeo remained with her throughout her life. Her school years were spent in the Arnett Public school system, where she was a member of the basketball team and the catcher on the softball team. She excelled in academics and was the valedictorian of the graduating class of 1963.
On June 1, 1963, a partnership of nearly 52 years began when Patsy became the wife of Marshall Murphy at the First Baptist Church in Arnett, Oklahoma. The newlyweds' first home was established in Marshall's hometown of Leedey; they welcomed their daughter, Leslie, while living in Cheyenne. The family of three also lived in Arapaho before building a home at Foss Lake. While living at the lake, Pat was employed at the First State Bank in Foss. Many friendships and memories were made there, and daughter Lacie was added to the family. With the retirement of Marshall's parents in 1973, they relocated to the family farm east of Leedey. Pat was involved in every aspect of farm life and the school activities of her children. In addition to ranch work, she enjoyed working part-time for several local flower shop owners; but she excelled most at being a full-time grandma. When granddaughter Ashlee and grandson Rylee visited, farm life activities looked a little different. The necessary work still got done; but there was more time spent in the porch swing, homemade cookies had lots of sprinkles, the feed pickup was stocked with a candy jar, and hot dogs cooked on an open fire was a frequent meal. She was 'Grandma Pat' to the Shryock cousins, the Woodson girls, countless friends of Ashlee and Rylee, and bonus grandson James. Pat was a homemaker, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her artistic talent was displayed in her work as a florist, a seamstress, her painting, and in later years coloring. Pat enjoyed reading, old country music, gardening, dancing, and watching Thunder basketball. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She was the hostess of the Patterson family Thanksgiving dinner for 41 years. She moved to Providence Place Assisted Living in Woodward, Oklahoma in 2023 and was called to her heavenly home December 31, 2024 at the age of 79. Pat lived a full life, she was a practical person and a hard worker; she could build fence, feed cows, paint you a picture, patch the hole in your favorite jeans, or bake you a pan of cinnamon rolls.... whatever needed to be done.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Naomi Patterson, beloved husband Marshall Murphy, sister and brother-in-law Clara and Harold Berry, brother Richard Patterson, a niece Kathy Berry Steers, a nephew Bucky Patterson, in-laws John and Vola Murphy, and other loved ones. Cherishing a lifetime of memories and remembering her philosophy of 'the best sermons are lived not preached' are her children, Leslie Nebhut and husband Dennis, Lacie Landers and husband Hugh, her grandchildren Ashlee Shryock, Rylee Shryock, and James Landers. Her sister Annie Rohrer and husband Donald, nephew Jeff Rohrer and his daughter Aubrey, her niece Melissa Folks and husband Wade and their sons Cole and Cody, and great nephew Ryan Steers. Her extended family of the Murphys, Rounds, and Watsons, other relatives, and friends will also miss her dearly.
