Pat Curry Tryon: A Beautiful Life Well-Lived
February 9th, 1936 - April 11, 2025
Pat (Josephine Patrick) Curry Tryon of Easton, MD, formerly of Belmont, MA and Portland, ME, passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by her daughters.
Pat was a selfless champion for those around her, always going the extra mile as a mother, friend, cheerleader, advocate, volunteering to lift those around her. Her motto,
"You have to eat dessert first and enjoy the little things throughout life," was reflected in her ever-present plate of cookies for neighbors, friends, family, and colleagues.
Pat's generous, sweet spirit and good nature inspired others to pay it forward and spread the wealth of kindness and friendship.
Pat, daughter of Jodie (Josephine Hulse) and Henry Milo Curry II, was born in Wichita, KS, and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. She attended Chatham Women's College
in Pittsburgh before marrying her life-long love, John Gregory Tryon of Auburn, NY. The couple raised three daughters in Buffalo, NY, and later in Belmont, MA.
After her children finished grade school, Pat began her successful career at Arthur D. Little, in Cambridge, MA, where she was recognized for her collaboration and
dedication with several awards. She began her career on an IBM typewriter and retired fluent in Microsoft Office and an Apple laptop.
Upon retiring, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of living on the water in Portland, Maine. She had a beautiful view of the working harbor, and quickly became a part of the
community, making many new friends and spending countless hours enjoying cultural events, gardening and volunteering. Pat's condo was a third-floor walk-up and
when she adopted her beloved Jack Russell, Jibbie, she said that the multiple dog walks up and down those stairs would keep her young, agile and healthy! Jibbie's
exuberance kept Pat's life quite interesting; she willingly posed in costume for any occasion and some years earned prime holiday billing with her vet who sat at the
kitchen table removing porcupine spines, batteries ingested and various other maladies. And, of course, Pat always had a plate of cookies ready for him. During her years in Maine, Pat often meandered up the coast on Rt. 1, stopping along the way and developing many warm relationships with small business owners. She knew everyone's names, who had the best blueberries and popovers, and where the best bakeries were located.
Throughout her life, Pat was a proud, gracious and dedicated volunteer who worked tirelessly with her always sunny and optimistic disposition. One of her first endeavors was with the Speech, Hearing & Language Clinic in Buffalo, where she and her husband founded SOUND, The Society for Understanding Deafness, to raise awareness and funds to support interventions for youngsters who were deaf. After relocating to Belmont, MA, Pat devoted her passion to volunteering and fundraising at Mt. Auburn Hospital, Belmont Garden Club, and the Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation. Pat was also an avid
gardener and provided the birds with year-round shelter, food and heated water baths.
Her closest friends often awoke on May 1 to find a special May Day basket of flowers on their doorstep. She and her husband, John, were also passionate antique car enthusiasts, so serving on the Museum Board and helping develop a very successful gift shop were natural endeavors. Pat also served on the Board of Belmont Savings Bank and helped organize and run the Antique and Classic Boat Festival held each summer in Salem, MA. In Portland, Pat enjoyed volunteering for the Narrow-Gauge Railroad and
Museum.
After more than 20 years on the water in Maine, Pat relocated to Easton, MD, where she lived her remaining years with her daughter, Adeline and enjoyed frequent visits from her other daughters, Elizabeth and Katie.
Pat was predeceased by her parents, Jodie and Henry Curry, and her husband, John Tryon. She is survived by a loving family, including her brother, Chick (Charles H. and Diane) Curry of Camden, DE, daughters, Elizabeth Tryon Bodell of Naples, FL, Adeline Tryon of Easton, MD, Katie Tryon Rauh (Jim) of Houston, TX, and four grandsons: Griffin and Nicholas Bodell, Derek Rauh and Harry Tryon Brown.
Pat always had a celestial connection, with a particular fondness for the Moon. The Full Pink Moon glows brightly, welcoming her home.
A Full Moon Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
