COUNCIL, (Patty) Patricia Ann passed away with the same fierce courage with which she lived, on Christmas Eve morning after being visited with close family and friends at Maine Medical Center, in Portland Maine. She was 78 years young. Born and raised in Woburn, MA, January 31, 1947. Patty lived there intermittently for 61 years, before moving to Portland, Maine in 2009. She was the daughter of the late Artus and Margaret (West) Council and lived a life marked by grit, humor, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. Patty was a proud alumna of St. Charles Borromeo High School, Woburn, MA, The Boston Conservatory of Music College and Emerson College. While at the Conservatory and Emerson, she developed lifelong friendships with Philip Robinson, Poet and Julie Goell, Performer.

Patty was known for her beautiful contralto voice. She won many voice competitions. She could sing and speak in several languages including Italian and Russian and played the violin.

She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa and USA and getting herself involved in many human rights activism and project:. Patty was one of the first to go out amid the homeless handing out sandwiches and being very vocal about prisoner rights. Patty had a passionate love of life and an extraordinary ability to become a part of communities wherever she lived.

She was admired for her intellect, integrity, and steadfast work ethic. She helped one of her lifelong now deceased friend Julie Goell, a clown & eccentric performer, edit her "Life In A Clown House" production. A gifted editor, one of Patty's many attributes was being able to write extensive work-related journals and she assisted many people with her wordsmith knowledge. Point in case, Patty had a prolific editorial ability, and earnestly helped to edit her dear friend Philip Robinson's four books of poetry. Philip with Patty's knowledge has dedicated his forthcoming book, "Dancing with The Ancestors and Other Beloveds", to her.

Patty was deeply religious and was a member of the Catholic Daughters and received their highest award. She corresponded frequently with church leaders on all matters of interest to her. She donated generously throughout her life - always quietly, always with intention. Her greatest legacy was kindness. Patty believed that the smallest mercies mattered most and that kindness was the most reliable currency a person could spend. She is survived by her sisters, Judith, Suzanne, and Gail; as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.
She is further survived by the Park Danforth Facility, in Portland, Maine and the Jewish Community who became her extended family through her 17-years in Maine.

I am heartbroken to learn of Patty's death.
She and I were close in age and memories of times past.
She was a brilliant woman with a talent for music, international relations, and a concern for the suffering of so many.
Her connection to the Jewish community of Portland was extraordinary. She never missed an event that was part of the community's religious and cultural offerings.
My wife and I received a greeting card from Patty on every Jewish holiday. Her embrace of Judaism did not deter from her Catholic identity and faith, indeed it only showed Portland's Jewish community the degree of interreligious relationships that are possible after the historic promulgation of Nostra Aetate, the Church's historic pronouncement that marked a new relationship between Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and Islam.
May Patty's memory be as a blessing for our world.
