Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service - Letchworth Chapel on Oct. 16, 2025.
ENFIELD, NC – Patricia "Pat" Green Hardee passed away on October 14, 2025, in Nashville, North Carolina, at the age of 97. Born June 15, 1928, in Alexandria, Virginia, Pat lived a blessed life full of love and creativity.
Pat's journey began as the oldest of four girls. At age 16 she left home for her final year of high school at Campbell Junior College (now Campbell University), during World War II. It was during this formative time that she met her future husband, Joseph Earlton Hardee, who was also a student at Campbell. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from Radford College (then the Woman's Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute [VPI] and now Radford University), Pat worked as a dietician at Bluefield College in Bluefield, West Virginia.
Pat spent much of her life as a homemaker. While she was a talented seamstress, it was food and cooking that brought her joy. In the 1970s she conducted research for Greensboro food writer Irena Chalmers, delving into various cooking techniques and culinary history. Always an avid reader, Pat gathered over the course of her life an impressive collection of cookbooks that she used to expand her own culinary expertise. Pat was a valued member of the North Carolina Unit of The Herb Society of America for many years, where she shared her knowledge and passion for cooking with herbs with fellow enthusiasts.
Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Joseph Earlton Hardee; her son, Joseph Earlton Hardee, Jr.; her parents, Ferol Hasseltine Riffe Green and Norvell Ryland Green; and her sisters, Ferol Ryland Green Simpson and Ann Henry Green Paisley. She leaves behind her sister Mary Barbee Green Quinn; daughter Susan Hardee Norris and her husband Joseph; daughter-in-law Mary Mitchell Hardee; daughter Dorothy "Dotty" Ryland Hardee; grandchildren Elwood Joseph Hardee and his wife Catherine, and Martha Patricia Hardee Padgett and her husband Dillon; and great-granddaughters Annabelle Patricia Padgett and Riley-Joe Jean Hardee.
