Patricia Mae Herndon, 78, of Valley Lee, Maryland passed away peacefully at her residence on May 11, 2024.
Born in Lawton, Oklahoma to the late Elbert Phelps and Lydia Mae Walston, she was the loving wife of the late John Elias Herndon, Jr. (September 4, 2018).
Once she and John retired from their civil service positions at Webster Field, they moved to their dream home in Georgia where she proceeded to adopt every stray animal that wondered onto the property. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards with family and golf. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her much loved Dallas Cowboys play against her husband's Washington Redskins – that was always a fun time around the house. She was also an avid quilter and loved making quilts for her family – any occasion was a reason to start something new. And while she loved spending time with all her family, the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her so much joy and were the highlight of her days.
Patricia (Patsy as her family called her growing up) is survived by her three children Petra Lynn Utara (Christian), Kimberly Gail Wasem (KJ), Angela Dawn Herndon (Lawrence), grandchildren, Taylor Danielle Spalding (Brent), Lorin Mae Bond (Kerry), Mason Elias Carlisle, great grandchildren, Carter James Spalding, Carson William Spalding, Raelynn Nicole Bond and Kerry Alexander (Tripp) Bond III. She is also survived by her siblings Alfred Wayne Smith (Anicita), Charles Weldon Smith (Charlene), Mary Katherine (Kathy) Phelps, and Delores Elaine Phelps.
Along with her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her brothers William (Willie) A. Smith, Wesley A. Smith, Elbert (Butch) L. Phelps, and Larry Joe Phelps.
She was an amazing mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be dearly missed by all.
All Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650.
Condolences to the family may be made at www.brinsfieldfuneral.com.

Pat was not only my sister but my best friend. When we were growing up she would always let me tag along with her. It was hard for her to enjoy herself because she was having to baby sit me. She was the smartest person I know and I have been so blessed to have her as my sister. I wiill miss her terribly and there will always be an empty space in my heart for her.
