Patricia Joy (Latta) Highfill was born October 18, 1933 at the family farm North of Fargo, Oklahoma to John H. Latta and Reva Arlene (Atkinson) Latta. Pat spent her childhood on the family farm where she was born and where she helped with the farm chores, including milking cows, tending to the chickens and gardening. Pat was one of five siblings, two older twin boys Dwight and Ernest, then Pat, one younger sister Joyce and one younger brother Johnnie. Pat and Joyce shared many stories about growing up with two older brothers. Pat and Joyce had a lot of recognition in high school for their basketball skills. Pat graduated from Fargo High School in 1951.
She married Dale Thomas from Fargo on September 7, 1951 and to this union two children were born, Rick Thomas and J.D. Thomas. After marriage, Dale and Pat moved to Stillwater where Dale attended one semester of college at Oklahoma State University, while Pat worked at the T.G.&Y. store. Dale wanted to become a farmer and rancher, so they moved back to Fargo, where they purchased their first property, which was 80 acres that adjoined his parents, John and Audrie Thomas. While continuing to lease and buy additional land, Dale and Pat moved into Fort Supply and they worked at Western State Hospital in Fort Supply. Dale began working at the dairy prior to him becoming the purchasing agent for the hospital. Pat started working in the laundry before becoming the Post Master. They worked at the hospital while also farming, feeding cattle, tending the land and raising two boys. In later years, Pat worked at Boomer Buick in Woodward. They divorced in May of 1973.
Pat was married to Simpson Walker from Freedom, Oklahoma for a few years. Pat worked at J&R Transport for a couple of years before marrying Bob Highfill from Mooreland, Oklahoma and they were married for over thirty years until Bob's death in June of 2014.
Pat had a few passions. She painted several paintings and crafted with paint. She could cook anything, but pecan and lemon pies were favorites. For her boys birthdays, she made their favorite chicken fried steak and J.D. always had his favorite strawberry cake. She was always ready to go to the surrounding casinos to play the slot machines. She also was very excited each time the NBA basketball season started. Pat later became a fan of the NCAA football and basketball seasons. Basketball was her main event, but she didn't miss a football game either. In later years she became a big Oklahoma Sooner girls softball team fan. She was always a Oklahoma State fan first, but tailing close behind were the Oklahoma Sooners.
She was preceded in death by her second son, J.D. Thomas as a result of an auto accident in 1978, her husband Bob Highfill, parents John and Reva Latta, brothers Ernest Latta and wife Dorothy, John Latta, Dwight Latta and wife Sue, sister Joyce (Latta) Hamilton. Pat is survived by one son, Rick Thomas of Los Angeles; one grandson, Austin Thomas of Woodward; great grandson, Dahlyn Thomas; sister in law, Rella Latta of Edmond; close friend, Janell Reutlinger; and other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Place in honor of Pat with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
