Patricia Ann (Carrigan) Horgan, of Northborough, MA, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. After a courageous and steadfast battle with colon cancer, Patricia's spirit remained unshaken. Throughout her journey, she exemplified grace and resilience-facing each challenge with quiet strength and a deep devotion to the moments shared with those she loved most.
Born and raised in
Worcester, MA, Patricia was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Smith) Carrigan. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy and Anna Maria College, and earned a Master's Degree in Education from Worcester State College.
Patricia was a devoted mother, a gifted artist, a passionate educator, and a dedicated volunteer. She married the love of her life, Michael A. Horgan, and together they moved to Northborough to raise a family. Patricia is predeceased by her husband, Michael A. Horgan; her son, Brett P. Horgan; and her brother, Michael "Buddy" Carrigan.
She is survived by her son, Michael Horgan, and his wife, Tracy, of Northborough; her daughter, Deirdre Smirl, and her husband, Jon, of Wellesley, MA; and her cherished grandchildren, Connor and Fiona Smirl, also of Wellesley.
A lifelong educator, Patricia began her teaching career in the Wayland before moving to the Westborough school system, where she found her calling in special education. She was deeply committed to supporting children with learning differences, helping countless students reach their full potential.
Beyond the classroom, Patricia was a prolific artist. She began painting New England landscapes and seascapes in watercolor, eventually transitioning to oil while exploring a variety of artistic styles. In later years, she focused on American folk art, creating pieces that celebrated Christmas traditions, waterfowl, and early Victorian themes. Her work was featured in galleries in Boston, New York, and Chicago, and remains part of several private collections in homes throughout New England. Several of her pieces were also exhibited in the American Folk Art Museum in New York City.
Patricia gave generously of her time and talents to causes close to her heart. She was a dedicated member of the St. John's Mothers Guild, playing a vital role in organizing the school's annual auction and fundraising gala. She also supported the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (now
Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes) with the same energy and commitment.
A passionate genealogist, Patricia took great pride in researching her family history, tracing her roots across generations and reconnecting with relatives in both Ireland and the United States.
In retirement, Patricia and her husband traveled extensively, fulfilling a lifelong dream of exploring the world together. Their adventures took them to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and across Europe.
Patricia's legacy is one of love, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Danielle Lawrence MSN with the Good Shepherd Community Hospice in Newton, MA, and to the compassionate staff and volunteers at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA. Their exceptional care, kindness, and unwavering support provided Patricia with comfort, dignity, and peace in her final days.

Relatives and Friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours at the Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Road, on the Common, Shrewsbury Center, on Thursday, October 9th.. from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernadette Parish, 266 Main Street, Northborough, Friday, October 10, 2025 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Worcester.
Those attending the mass are asked to go directly to church.
