Patricia Quay Lybarger, born 8-24-27, died 1-23-2024, age 96.
Survivors include her children, Donel Lybarger, Jr., Tim Lybarger (Linda), Linda Joseph (Richard), and Susan Ford (Robert); Grandchildren, Tricia and Eric Ford (Carly), Adam Lybarger (Elizabeth), Gilbert O'Connor (Alison) and Kathryn Stager (Augustus IV); and great-grandchildren, Augustus V and James. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews (with one deceased), and many grand-nieces and nephews. Other predeceased family includes Donel Lybarger, Sr., Marjorie and Bill Larkins, and George Quay, III.
Pat was a graduate of Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve (now known as Case Western Reserve). Graduating in 1949, she continued the tradition of her mother and grandmother before her, both alumni of Mather College.
Pat will be remembered for her kindness, having learned by her parents' (George and Marjorie Quay) example the value of charity to others. It was her nature to give selflessly to others whether volunteering hundreds of hours at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, Hattie Larlham Foundation in Portage county, or simply delivering a Holiday meal to a local family down on their luck.
Nurtured by her parents' love of horses, hunting, and gardening, Pat's life revolved around her deep relationship with nature. As a child, AKA "Patsy", showed her Uncle's horses, helped her Grandfather grow orchids, and worked daily on the family's property gardening and tending horses, goats, and chickens. From an early age she travelled twice each year to Sheenboro, Quebec – in the summers for family camping and swimming in the Ottawa River and again in October for Partridge hunting. This was a tradition that she continued into her 90's.
A devoted reader, one of her favorite authors was Sigurd Olsen, an American writer, environmentalist, and advocate for the protection of wilderness. She enjoyed membership in a women's book club well into her 80s. Always the athlete and physically active, Pat followed her mother's example in the world of competitive tennis, which she enjoyed while nurturing some of her best friendships.
Pat gained local notoriety for her prize-winning Dahlias. She was a member of the National Dahlia Society, serving on the area's chapter. Locals may remember large bouquets of her blooms at the Chagrin Falls post office and Chagrin Valley Farms' horse show office.
Her daily feedings of wild turkeys, bluebirds, and hummingbirds attracted many feathered friends to her heavily wooded home in Bainbridge. She was particularly fond of the Bluebirds that nested each year in boxes visible through her living room window.
Pat experienced much of the world through her wide travel, her favorite location being the Greek Isles. She made sure to capture many magical moments through her skilled photography and was competitive in local camera club shows and events.
An avid football fan, Pat faithfully followed the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State teams right through the 2023 season. Her loyalty to her teams, however, pales in comparison to the loving and loyal devotion given to her surviving family, who will miss her terribly. They will hold a private burial and memorial per her wishes. Those who knew Pat and wish to honor her giving nature, may donate to their favorite charity.
