Patricia Ann Redd Shumway had a joyful heavenly reunion on October 21, 2025. Patsy was born on August 22, 1938, the first child of Vivian Washburn and Alma J. Redd. She was very well loved, and the confidence she gained from being so adored allowed her to cheerfully love others for the rest of her life.
Patsy's life could be summed up by the Savior's Sermon on the Mount.
She was merciful, pure in heart, and a peacemaker. Her favorite scriptures were those about having no contention among them and being one.
Patsy loved her growing-up years in Blanding. She was active in the Primary and Young Women programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Those early activities shaped her life. After graduating from high school, she attended Brigham Young University in Provo, where she majored in Home Economics.
While attending BYU, Patsy was determined to marry a boy from Blanding and live there. She started dating Kay Shumway, and they were married on September 17, 1958, in the Manti Temple. She kept attending college and graduated with her bachelor's degree. Although Kay was from Blanding, they moved to Indiana, California, and Washington for Kay's schooling and career. During this time, their family grew to 7 children.
They made friends everywhere they went, and Patsy continued to keep in contact with as many as possible. Her address books are legendary.
Eventually, Patsy and Kay moved back to Blanding in 1977, where they enjoyed raising their children. Patsy put her home economics degree to good use by cooking thousands of healthy meals for her family and teaching them about nutrition. She was also a 4-H leader for several years, teaching her children and others how to cook and sew. She was always willing to pick out stiches and clean up messes so others could learn.
Patsy's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are her ultimate joy. They gave her a new reason to serve. She organized family reunions and made yogurt popsicles, summer slush, sloppy joes, and so many special treats. She sewed pajamas, blankets, and costumes to put smiles on their faces.
She took it upon herself to notice the one who was overlooked or whose heart was aching. She sent letters and cards to her children, grandchildren, friends, and long-lost relatives. Her ministering to others extended throughout Blanding and into other communities.
Patsy loved making connections with everyone she met. If they were even distantly related, she would figure it out, explain it to them, and share a story about their shared ancestor. She collected histories of her ancestors and passed on their legacies to her children and grandchildren.
She was not one to get up and share from the pulpit, but she was known to leave a meeting to go visit the sister who wasn't there. She was a doer of the word, not a hearer only.
She lived to serve others. It was not work for her if it was helping someone else.
Patsy's lifelong impact of love and service will be missed, but carried on by those she loved and ministered to.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lewis Kay Shumway, her sister, Marta Brown, and her children, Jody, Stuart, Katrina, Beverly, Amber, and Robyn. 25 Grandchildren and 37 Great-Grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Anita; her brother, Harold Redd; her sister, Gretchen Bray; and her parents, Vivian Washburn and Alma J. Redd.
