Patricia Spruill Obituary

Patricia McQueen Spruill (87) passed away on September 23rd, 2023 at Riverside Doctors' Hospital in Williamsburg, surrounded by loving family. Pat was born to Helen Lipscomb McQueen and Rufus Adams McQueen in North Carolina on Nov. 17, 1935 and enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her brother Ralph Lipscomb McQueen in Lumberton. She attended St. Mary's College and graduated from UNC - Chapel Hill with a degree in Elementary Education. She spent years as an educator, with positions ranging from pre-school teacher to college Dean of Students at St. Andrews in Laurinburg. She met Joseph Lawrence Spruill through family and they married in 1967, while Joe was an officer in the United States Army. They welcomed their first daughter, Helen McQueen Spruill, in February of 1970 followed by twin daughters, Patricia Anne Spruill and Elizabeth Leigh Spruill in November, 1973.

Pat and Joe spent many years exploring the world together, admiring and collecting antiques, visiting with family and vacationing at the beach. Pat loved working with children and found ways to stay connected to education even after her retirement, as well as volunteering for a variety of local organizations. She will be remembered for so many things, but in particular, her charming wit, playful sense of humor and the graciousness with which she welcomed all people.

Patricia is survived by her devoted husband, three loving children, and nieces and nephews in NC, NY and IL. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 201 W. Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg, VA 23185, with a reception to follow at the Parish House. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6350 Center Dr Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
