Remembering Patrick Michael Devine ("Patico")
Patrick Michael Devine - affectionately known as Patico, In Spanish, it can stand for Panther, Tiger, and Crocodile-strong, brave, and resilient-but it also means "little duck," a symbol of tenderness and closeness. Was famous and beloved for his sharp wit, intellect, sense of humor, slyness, loyalty, and, most of all, for his authenticity as a husband, friend, brother, and companion, present in so many important moments since we first met him.
As we all know, anyone subject to Patrick's fun-loving teasing, warm laughter, and attention was blessed. Why? Because it meant that he thought quite highly of you and that you had a friend for life. Those who engaged with him family, friends, and strangers alike were gifted with his thoughts on a myriad of topics that lifted the soul, including music, film, literature, world affairs, and language. With his photographic memory, he could recall with uncanny detail specific moments in his life when he had been moved, touched, or hurt by something he had experienced or witnessed.
And speaking of that photographic memory, Patrick could answer just about any question you could possibly have about a particular author, musician, actor, or the Ravens. It really didn't matter how obscure it was or from what decade, he would remember the album, release year, singer, guitarist and even personal curiosities of the band members.
In his early days, he surprised everyone as a DJ, entertaining weddings with music. Later, he proudly became an attorney, defending what he believed was right with passion and integrity. For more than 40 years, Patrick worked at the U.S. Postal Service, where he didn't just managed labor relations, he delivered friendship and camaraderie always having a fun line to highlight the most serious matters. There, he formed bonds that lasted a lifetime, leaving a mark on everyone lucky enough to cross his path.
Patrick not only spoke about his fascination with Colombia, but made it an integral part of his life ordering "Changua" and "Sancocho" as any Colombian. He practiced his Spanish with any native speaker who crossed his path, having three feet or in this case two prosthesis wan never an obstacle to dance and enjoy every moment.
There are so many qualities to admire in Patrick. One of the most salient was his courage, his fierce resilience, and fighter spirit. Patrick's health challenges would have led many to give up on themselves and on life. But not Patrick. He fought to overcome each obstacle, every health issue, right to the end and he did with such dignity that inspired so many around.
Patrick, we know you are looking upon us, reminding us that this should be a celebration, a moment to honor you and your beautiful life.
We will miss you, as the world feels flatter and less vibrant without your presence.
We will always hold you close, as you now rest in eternity, in peace and in joy.
Patico, we will always live in our hearts.
With love your wife Erika, Your furry kids Diablita and Flacco and your brothers Tim & Dan.
Recordando a Patrick Michael Devine ("Patico")
