Raymond J. Deeters, 81, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the hospital, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born on May 15, 1944, in Alexandria, Virginia, Raymond was the eldest child of the late George and Gladys Deeters. He is survived by his loving sister, Gladys Kozlik. Growing up, Raymond enjoyed mashed potatoes, vanilla milkshakes, and playing outdoors-a simple joy that stayed with him throughout his life.
Raymond attended schools in Alexandria and proudly earned his high school diploma. He had a lifelong passion for cars-detailing them to a flawless shine and racing them for fun (and sometimes, winning!). When he wasn't behind the wheel, he found peace in tending to his yard. He took great pride in his corner lot, where the grass stayed green and the rose bushes-planted by his late wife Betty-bloomed beautifully for all to see.
He loved spending time with his wife and children, often visiting the zoo or making trips into Washington, D.C., to see the cherry blossoms. Raymond also dedicated many years of service to Giant Food, where he worked as a managing night clerk and formed many lasting friendships with his coworkers.
In 2005, Raymond suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed, yet his spirit remained unshaken. He continued to attend family gatherings, including crab cookouts and backyard pool parties for his grandchildren. Always seen with a cup of coffee or a coca-cola in hand and a witty, sarcastic remark ready to follow, he offered both humor and heartfelt advice to those around him. Raymond was a good-hearted, hardworking man who will be deeply missed.
Raymond leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Shirley Deeters; his five children, Keri Hackley, Christopher Deeters, Deborah Warner, Troy Lambert, and John Naylor; fifteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. His love, laughter, and lessons will live on in each of them.
He will be remembered for his laughter, his love for family, and the strength that carried him through every storm.
The family will receive friends at the Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 from 11:00am until 1:00 PM. A graveside ceremony will follow at 2:00pm in Mount Comfort Cemetery.
