Dr. Patrick Kolima Pieh

Dr. Patrick Kolima Pieh, 81, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Born January 1, 1945, in Taiama, Sierra Leone, to Rev. Peter P. Pieh and Nancy N. Pieh, Patrick was a descendant of Sengbeh Pieh (Cinqué), leader of the Amistad rebellion in 1839. He was raised in a family deeply rooted in faith, education, and service.
Patrick immigrated to the United States in 1966 and earned a B.A. in History from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, an M.A. in History from Michigan State University, and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum Development and Instruction from MSU. He devoted his career to higher education, teaching and serving as an administrator at institutions including Metropolitan State University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, and Wayne County Community College.
A lifelong educator and mentor, Patrick was passionate about history, youth development, and community empowerment, particularly for Black and African students. His Christian faith guided his life and service, and he was an active member of several United Methodist congregations.
Patrick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Akosua" Pieh. He is survived by his son, Luseni Pieh (Melissa Vargas); daughter, Dr. Nyota Pieh (Dr. Peter Vasquez); three grandchildren; siblings; and many extended family members in the United States and Africa.
His life was marked by humility, faith, and a steadfast commitment to family and community.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 206 at Grace Community United Methodist Church, 15888 Archdale Street, Detroit, at 10:00 am. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 am.
