Patsy Joan Hedgecock Pappas, 88, of Myrtle Beach passed away at home on Monday, May 6, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She was born in Guilford County, North Carolina on May 14, 1935. Patsy was raised with eight siblings in a sharecropping family who grew tobacco, various other row crops, and virtually all of the sustenance their family required. She was educated in the Guilford County public school system before moving to Myrtle Beach in 1960.
Throughout her life, Patsy enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends as they gathered at her house to celebrate birthdays and other special events. She was affectionately known as Yia Yia to her numerous grandchildren and "sister" to her twin Peggy whom she spoke with on the phone every night.
Patsy was involved in several local organizations including the Daughters of Penelope, and the Ladies of Philoptochos. She also held various leadership roles in the Myrtle Beach Drove #205 of the 8th Does including President, Secretary, and SC State President in 1996. She had since been a member-at-large.
Patsy was predeceased by her late husband Nick A. Pappas; parents Nellie Davis and Harlan Perry Hedgecock; brothers James Hedgecock and Sanford "Buddy" Hedgecock; sisters Helen Payne, Margie Patton, Betty Moore, Linda Robinson, and her identical twin Peggy Waters; and daughter Beverly Kirby.
She is survived by sons Steve Bohannon (Dianne) of Aynor, Mark Fidler (Donna) of Bristol, TN, Angela Collins (Victor) of Preston, MD, Toni Altman (Michael) of Hemingway, SC, Barbara MacBay (Gordon) of Murrells Inlet; sister Judy Foxworth (Norman) of Greensboro, NC; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Kasey Cox (granddaughter), Ryan Mercer (grandson) and Ted Waters (nephew) for their loving care and commitment to mom.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, May 9, 2024 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at McMillan-Small Funeral Home at 2:00 PM on Friday May 10, 2024, with interment immediately afterward at Southern Palms Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
