Patty King Molnar of Edisto Beach S.C., born April 3, 1952 passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side, Friday, April 11, 2025 in Lexington Kentucky. Patty is survived by her beloved husband of 19 years, Michael Anthony Molnar.
Patty grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky and moved to Lexington in 1970 to attend the University of Kentucky where she graduated with her teaching certificate in 1973 and continued to get her master's degree at Western Kentucky University. She taught English at Winburn Middle school and then retired from teaching while at Tates Creek High School. A long-time resident of Woodford County, 1982-2015 then moving to her heart's desire – Edisto Beach South Carolina where she made many friends, always welcoming everyone to her home. She loved walking along the beach and looking for sea glass and pottery from the old Edingsville Plantation. Patty was always eager to have visitors and show them "her" island. Patty was involved in mentoring sea turtles. She would stay on the beach at night to watch for the mama turtles making their nest and laying their eggs. She would be up at dawn scouting for the nest to mark with her turtle patrol friends. Finally, out at night again waiting for those babies to hatch and she would lead them to water. Patty also enjoyed kayaking, sailing, camping, hiking and exploring with her husband for many years.
In addition to her husband Michael, Patty is survived by her sisters Pamela King, Paula (Mike) King Evans, nieces and nephews Christopher (Tiffany) Qualls, Cory (Erin) Qualls of Versailles Kentucky, Kristin (Shawn) Burger of Bergin Kentucky and Dr. Ashley Claunch & Taylor of Louisville Kentucky and several great nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own. Patty was proceeded in death by her father James O. King and mother Iola P. King.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00pm on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Jonathan Berry officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 11:00am. Services will also be conducted on a later date at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Lexington, Kentucky and a memorial service will be held at Edisto Beach where her ashes will be spread in the ocean. Patty was my English teacher at Tates Creek my junior year of high school. English was my favorite subject and Patty (Mrs. Garten, then) was undoubtedly my favorite teacher. I have many memories of laughing in her class and her sarcastic humor to all of us students. She was a very dedicated teacher.

Shortly after my high school graduation, I was invited for a visit. Upon arriving at her house, I found Patty had baked me a chocolate zucchini birthday cake and had wrapped a little present for me. I soon went off to college and dial-up-internet and e-mail were just kicking off. We decided we´d try it out and became brief pen-pals my freshman year. Occasionally, Patty would send me snail mail at school. Her letters never failed to arrive just in the nick of time that I needed encouragement.

I was actually just thinking about her and the sea turtles within the last week and wondering where her adventures had taken her.

I am so grieved to learn of this sudden loss. I am grateful to have had her as my teacher and for the time she invested in me. It made a difference. I pass along my sincerest condolences to her family. May you be comforted by happy memories.

Patty was my first friend when my family moved to Owensboro in October 1962. She was one of my bridesmaids in May 1971. I have many wonderful memories with Patty. She was so sweet.

I hear your name upon the wind,
blowing across the ocean,
reaching out to caress the earth.
Your light will carry on as you would have it.
Peacefully holding your soul.

Rarely do you find a friend who touches your soul and makes you feel a part of them so quickly. Patty is that person. Her heart was as large as life itself. She made everyone feel welcome and shared her life, as she shared her love. Her zest for nature matched her desires to be actively involved in all phases of her environment. Rafting, hiking, 'turtle-ing'; she was happiest when involved with the natural world.

My heart breaks at your leaving, but I know that you are at peace and now you may fly as free as a bird, gliding slowly across the sky, kissed by the sun, silent as stillness creeps into twilight.
