Patty was my English teacher at Tates Creek my junior year of high school. English was my favorite subject and Patty (Mrs. Garten, then) was undoubtedly my favorite teacher. I have many memories of laughing in her class and her sarcastic humor to all of us students. She was a very dedicated teacher.
Shortly after my high school graduation, I was invited for a visit. Upon arriving at her house, I found Patty had baked me a chocolate zucchini birthday cake and had wrapped a little present for me. I soon went off to college and dial-up-internet and e-mail were just kicking off. We decided we´d try it out and became brief pen-pals my freshman year. Occasionally, Patty would send me snail mail at school. Her letters never failed to arrive just in the nick of time that I needed encouragement.
I was actually just thinking about her and the sea turtles within the last week and wondering where her adventures had taken her.
I am so grieved to learn of this sudden loss. I am grateful to have had her as my teacher and for the time she invested in me. It made a difference. I pass along my sincerest condolences to her family. May you be comforted by happy memories.

Patty was my first friend when my family moved to Owensboro in October 1962. She was one of my bridesmaids in May 1971. I have many wonderful memories with Patty. She was so sweet.

I hear your name upon the wind,
blowing across the ocean,
reaching out to caress the earth.
Your light will carry on as you would have it.
Peacefully holding your soul.
Rarely do you find a friend who touches your soul and makes you feel a part of them so quickly. Patty is that person. Her heart was as large as life itself. She made everyone feel welcome and shared her life, as she shared her love. Her zest for nature matched her desires to be actively involved in all phases of her environment. Rafting, hiking, 'turtle-ing'; she was happiest when involved with the natural world.
My heart breaks at your leaving, but I know that you are at peace and now you may fly as free as a bird, gliding slowly across the sky, kissed by the sun, silent as stillness creeps into twilight.
