Paul Richard "Dick" Baum, 93 of Ashland passed away Thursday morning, December 8, 2022 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born on June 2, 1929 in Ashland the son of the late Walter and Olive (nee Hites) Baum.
Dick was a 1948 graduate of Ashland High School. He married the love of his life, Vera Belle Yarman on December 4, 1949.
He owned and operated Wonderland of Foods in West Salem for more than 40 years having retired in 1991. Although, retirement wasn't exactly what he had in mind. He kept working alongside his daughter and son-in-law at Grandpa's Cheese Barn and Sweeties becoming an ideal employee. It was there he earned his official title by his customer's and became affectionately known as "Grandpa". Dick maintained an active schedule while at the store and only stopped to have his picture taken with a tourist visiting Ashland. When asked by the media what his secret to good health and longevity, his humble reply was, "To keep moving, as long as you can".
Throughout his life, he was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Ashland. Dick loved to play golf, bowl, watch the Cleveland Indians, collect pig figurines, and of course play pinochle with friends and family. His life would not be complete without mention of his canine companion, Sweetie.
At the time of his passing, he was survived by his loving wife of 73 years, the now late, Mrs. Vera Baum of Ashland; three caring daughters, Jana Williams of Ashland, Ronda (Dick) Poorbaugh of Ashland, and Karla Snyder of Ashland; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Williams of Ashland, Mistie (John) Hray of Doylestown, Pappy (Brice) Poorbaugh of Louisburg, North Carolina, Joshua (Amy) Poorbaugh of New Palestine, Indiana, Bailey Snyder of Canton, Kaitlin (Justin) Brown of North Canton, and Garret Snyder of Canton; 19 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by one infant son, Matthew Paul Baum; and one granddaughter, Jamie L. Williams.
Funeral services for both Dick and Vera will be held, Monday, December 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Christian Church, 1425 King Road, Ashland, Ohio 44805 with Pastor Rich Pate presiding. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park. Friends may call Sunday, December 18, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church.
