Paul "Knutt" David Engle, 78, passed away in his Hamburg residence on Thursday, December 25, 2025, surrounded by his family, after a 13 year long battle with cancer. He lost that battle on Christmas Day. He was the loving husband of Billie A. (Mason), with whom he shared over 31 years together.
He was born in Wernersville to the late Calvin and Ellen (Holster) Engle and attended Hamburg School District.
For over 37 years he served as a diesel mechanic for Berks Products, but his true joy was in restaurants. He formerly owned the Dodge City Café of Cressona, where he met his future wife. In 1996, he and Billie established the Port Clinton Hotel, which they operated until 2004 when they sold and opened the P&T Phase 2 of Pottsville, and finally retired for good in 2009.
Knutt will be remembered as a true character with a sharp sense of humor. He loved to dance with Billie and held an appreciation for the good tunes that made life a little sweeter. His love for the outdoors shone through his many hunting and fishing trips with his son, Paul Dean Engle.
Breakfast at the Perry Restaurant with his brothers was very important to Knutt, and he enjoyed catching up with Moe. Knutt always started his day with a cup of coffee and the daily paper.
Left to treasure his memory is his beloved wife, Billie; their son, Paul Dean Engle, husband of Dana (Anderson) Engle, of Hamburg; and his grandson, Cooper Brooks Engle, who is expected May 2026. He also survived by his brothers, Larry Engle (husband of Grace); Robert Engle (husband of Lorraine); Tommy Engle (husband of Nancy); sister-in-law, Donna Wood (wife of Mark); and several nieces, nephews, and their families.
The loss of his son, Dean Allen Engle, affected Knutt for the rest of his life. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Lester, Leroy, Charlie (who is survived by his wife, Joan), Kenny (husband of the late Barbara), and Marguerite Schmeltzle (wife of the late Paul), and his sister-in-law, Debra Shoener (wife of the late Daniel).
Services for Knutt are private at his family's convenience. Kuhn Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc, of Hamburg are entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
