Paul Edward Hanson, Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully in Jacksonville, Florida on June 2nd, 2025. Born on March 20th, 1943, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, he was the son of Leoma and Paul Hanson. He grew up in Fernandina Beach, Florida where he attended high school and formed many life-long friendships. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Hospitality Management, he embarked on an extensive career in the restaurant business. He owned and operated multiple restaurants over his 48-year career including a Jacksonville legacy, The Tree Steak House.
Paul was the devoted husband of Gloria Hanson for 60 wonderful years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria, their children: Tom Hanson, Scott Hanson (Ryan), and Leigh Palmer (Richard); his sisters: Marsha Durrance and Dorothy Freeman; and four grandchildren: Mitchell, Ella, Hanson, and Logan.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Paul was an avid sports fisherman. He was known to fish competitively throughout the state of Florida. In 1981, he won the inaugural Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament with a record fish that sealed his passion for the water. He was equally enthusiastic about Florida State football and his alma mater, hosting annual fundraisers to support scholarships for students in need.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 6th at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home, located at 1305 Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach. He will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
Paul will be remembered for his dedication to family, steadfast commitment to his work, devoted friendships, and his kind and peaceful spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Donations may be made in his memory to St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida.

Paul taught a lot of us how to appreciate wine... Steaks, bakes, & salmon were my Arlington treats till the night I showed up at one of the wine tastings. Hard not to think about Paul when we uncork a good one, or the look on his face when it was 40-year-old vinegar. Doesn't seem like 50+ years. Raising a glass to a Jacksonville institution...

So very sorry to hear of the loss of Paul. I grew up with Paul and lived in the same neighborhood. Also, visited with him in Mandarin at the Tree Steak House. Paul was very personable to everyone. My sincere thoughts are with all of his family. Marcia Townsend Kilgore

I am so sad to learn this news of Paul´s passing. He was one of a kind, the best of the best, I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know him at The Tree in Mandarin. We (Don Parson, Mel Maycole, Ed McNamara and several others) made great memories with him and thought the world of him. He will be missed dearly, just learning the news wish I had known to be there to support the family during this time. My deepest sympathy´s. Thoughts and prayers for the family.
He will be greatly missed!!

One of the nicest guys I've ever known. When I first moved to Jacksonville in 1975, I became a regular at the original Tree Steak House in Arlington and continued through the opening and sale of the best ever - Mandarin! Paul treated everyone as though they were his best friend. A super guy who will be sorely missed! RIP my friend.

We were heartbroken to hear of Mr Paul´s passing. He brought joy, laughter, and an unmistakable presence that will be deeply missed.

We´ll always cherish the times spent in the carport with a cold beer in hand - Mr Paul had a way of making time feel easy, conversations feel important, and ordinary moments feel special.

His generosity, humor, and unwavering friendship were at the heart of so many great memories. We´ll miss the laughs, the loyalty, and the love he shared so freely.

May Mr Paul´s memory bring comfort to all who knew him, and may his spirit continue to inspire kindness and community in all of us.

With love and deepest sympathy,
Aaron and Scarlet

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Paul. FSU, fishing, and cooking were his loves, and in a different order depending on the day. I first met Paul in 1997 at a kingfish tournament in Treasure Island. He and Scott brought a truckload of steaks and baked potatoes and cooked for the entire motel full of fellow kingfisher people. It was the best steak ever!! Paul always had a great story and was so kind. He was a legend in Jacksonville and will be missed by everyone so very much.
