I had the wonderful experience to read the below, 22 most recent messages left mostly by "Steve's" former students. Collectively, those messages are a true reflection of the Steve Hohenstein I knew, although our meeting each other took place in the USMC in Vietnam in 1966. Steve was not long in our infantry company when it fell prey to an ambush by a unit of the North Vietnamese Army. He was severely wounded, so badly that when he was lifted out by helicopter, No one was sure that he would survive his wounds. But survived he did and within three months he was back from a Naval Hospital in Japan and back in the same infantry squad he had been in. No fanfare, no remorse, he just continued to do his job in the same quiet and friendly manner he always had. In a strange, but lucky twist of faith, Steve and I reconnected with each other and, shortly after, with about a dozen members of our platoon from about thirty years before, after Vietnam we began a small reunion. This group got together annually with our wives (or significant others) since the mid 1990s, and continued to gather for about 35 years. Steve was a mainstay to our gatherings often handling details like lodging, food and refreshments that we enjoyed for our three day gatherings. He will be deeply missed by all of us, Marines and their brides. He was every bit the fine man and gentleman at age 19 that he was at age 78. He was a great friend. Peter and, my bride, of 5 1/2 decades, Camille

He was a great man, a role model. He was tough but had a sense of humor. He truly cared about the students. He was a very fair minded teacher. My memory was having to wrestle him when we had wrestling in gym. He pushed you to become the best version that you could be. You will be missed Mr. Hohenstein!!!!

Steve was my gym teacher in highschool. He was the absolute best gym teacher and helped me with physical fitness instead of pushing me away. I was a big kid. He saw that I wanted to get better and he'd always help me get my pull ups. Senior year, because of Steve's hard work and dedication I was able to do my own set of pull ups. He was so proud of me. Then just a few years later I had the pleasure of working with him. We worked together for about 4 years at PHS where he once taught me. He always treated the staff with respect. Such a true wonderful man. Last I saw him was at a gun show at Springfield firehouse. We had a great conversation that left us in tears. I got to tell him thanks and that meant a lot to me. Rest Easy Mr. Hoh. You will always be a Palisades Legend. Class of 98 Todd Osmun.

I only hope that Coach Hohenstein knew the positive impact he had on so many student athletes during his career at Palisades. He was an American hero for his service to our country and he earned respect from every student he encountered for decades. As a coach he carried himself in such a way that you wanted to emulate him. I don't know of anyone that had negative thought towards this great man. The lessons I learned being around him, I have carried with me through my life. May he Rest in Peace.
