Paul B. Jones, III, of Scotts passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the age of 77. He was born on December 12, 1947, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for his community and family.
Paul graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1966, where he was class president and a standout in football and baseball. During those years, he met his high school sweetheart, Dawn Kathleen McCune, whom he married on November 7, 1969.
He proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, carrying his strong sense of patriotism throughout his life. Paul was a frequent speaker at Memorial Day and Veterans Day events in both Vicksburg and Fulton, honoring fellow service members and his country.
For over two decades, Paul dedicated his life to Vicksburg Community Schools, where he made a significant impact as a custodian. His journey began at Sunset Lake Elementary, before extending to Vicksburg Middle School for 17 years. Paul approached his work with a sense of ownership and pride.
Family was at the heart of Paul’s life. He took great pride in his daughters, Melissa and Anelyce, his five beautiful grandchildren, and was known for his creative cooking, which he loved sharing with friends and family.
Paul’s interests were many—he enjoyed bonfires, gardening, and caring for the deer and wildlife around his home. He loved being outdoors and could often be found watching storms roll in.
His warmth and caring nature will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. He was known for his warm greetings and for calling both friends and strangers “brother” to help them feel connected and valued.
Paul’s strong tenor voice will ring loud and clear in the heavenly choir.
He is preceded in death by his father and stepmother: Paul and Verna Jones, Jr; siblings: Charles and Arthur Baumgarte; Suellyn Cravens; Melinda Downs; and Mary Gerould; brother-in-law: Dick Downs and nephew: Rick Downs and his mother Bette Leiting.
Paul is survived by his wife of 55 years: Dawn; two daughters: Melissa (Michael) Macavage, of Bloomfield Hills; Anelyce Forney, of Whitehall; and five grandchildren: Olivia, Stella, Paige, Haven and Jaxson. He is also survived by four siblings: Sally Benedict, of GA; Cheryl Snow, of Saginaw; Scott Jones, of Kalamazoo; and Beth Jones, of Kalamazoo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday August 5, 2025, at 11am at the Vicksburg United Methodist Church, 217 South Main St, Vicksburg. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Followed by Paul being buried with military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
