A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, and brother, Paul "Red" Robert Mahar Sr., 80, of Tavares, FL, passed away peacefully at The Cove at Tavares Village on October 29, 2024. He was born June 4, 1944, in Albany, New York, and resided in Albany, NY, East Greenbush, NY, Virginia Beach, VA, Homestead, FL, and Tavares, FL.
Paul was from a large Irish Catholic family and served as an Altar Boy growing up in New York. After high school, Paul served in the Army National Guard and received a Medical Discharge. Paul worked at Montgomery Wards in Menands, where he met the love of his life, Claire. Paul went on to work for McKesson Corporation in Albany, NY, and as a Manager of Highway Oil Gasoline Station in East Greenbush, NY. Paul loved bowling and bowled several 300 games, he also appeared on several local television bowling tournament shows. Paul was an avid horse racing fan, once owning a Thoroughbred racehorse. Paul was a lifelong sports fan, he especially loved watching Baltimore Ravens football and Baltimore Orioles baseball
He is survived by his daughters Alicia Mahar and Kathleen (Scott) Mahar Morris, both of Virginia Beach, VA, son Roger (Carol) Mahar of Tavares, FL, and brother Thomas (Barbara) Mahar Jr. of Albany, NY. Paul had six grandchildren: Christena York, Dawn Preissler, Lauren (Janier) Matos, Ashley Morris, Jenna Mahar, and Paul (Rebecca) Mahar III. Eight great-grandchildren: Lyla Matos, Leo Mahar, Jordan Sidoti, Jude Bartley, Jack Matos, Eva Grace Matos, Rune Wojtaszek, and Sven Wojtaszek.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Claire Wolcott Mahar of Albany, NY, son Paul Mahar Jr. of East Greenbush, NY, his father Thomas Mahar Sr. of Albany, NY, his mother Isabelle Skelly Mahar of Albany, NY., brother Robert Mahar of Albany, NY, brother James Mahar of Latham NY, brother Charles Mahar of Selkirk, NY, and sister Rosemary Mahar Schetzel of Virginia Beach, VA.
Paul wished to be cremated, as was his wife, Claire. Per their wishes, their ashes will be spread in the clear waters of Key West, one of their favorite places to visit.
