Remembrance note of Paul Markowski
I am stunned that my best friend from youth is gone. We were inseparable from elementary school through high school. Then, we lived completely separate lives so far from Hicksville. I went to sea and he worked his way up the corporate ladder at IBM. I knew he was successful and had a wonderful family. The video slideshow was proof of that. He was a wonderful friend and very smart mostly due to his study regime. He was so dedicated to achieve where few could keep up, including me, but he was never boastful. He was the kind of friend with which you shared everything. Living across the street we even had walkie talkies to stay in touch those few hours we were apart. We were expert shots with BB guns as young boys can be. We could put out a candle or hit a coin tossed in the air (not every time of course). We played ping pong in his basement for hours on end but Steve and his father always challenged us. We would weightlift in the backyard, play street baseball, and countless hours of ice hockey down at the Lilco sump when it froze over. Friday nights was saved for ice skating at Cantiague Park where all the girls and boys would hang out. We even rode our bikes to Oyster Bay from Hicksville on day trips that were so fun especially down Snake Hill Road in Cold Spring Harbor. The camping memories at Taconic State Park with his family were the fondest memories of all. We would hike for hours in the woods, swim at Bash Bish Falls and generally clown around as kids do. The Markowski family would graciously allow me to tag along. I thought of Paul over the years, and I suppose I would have kept better in touch if I was on facebook being we were always nearly 1000 miles apart. My sister informed me of what happened. I will forever be in debt to him for the friendship and the best time our young lives. Rest in peace my friend, Mike Nesbitt
