Paul McKinney, age 73, of Roan Mountain, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, September 19, 2025. He was born on September 25, 1951, in Carter County to Christine Holden Carrico and the late Fred McKinney. In addition to his father, Paul was preceded in death by his infant son, Daniel Paul McKinney and a great-grandson, Givonni Buchanan.

Paul worked in landscaping and was of the Free Will Baptist faith. He loved the outdoors and found joy in fishing, and in his younger years, he spent many nights raccoon hunting. Known for always wearing a smile and never meeting a stranger, Paul touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness and warmth.

He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-three years, Joanne Gardner McKinney; his daughter, Rachel Ann Buchanan (Dan); his son, Terry Charles McKinney (Nancy); his brother, Murrell McKinney (Helen); his sister, Tina Hoyle (Keith); six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law also survive along with special friends, Brad and Julie Ray and Maureen Hafner.

Paul's life will be remembered for his faith, his love of the outdoors, and the joy he brought to his family and friends.

A celebration of Paul McKinney's life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with Reverend Randy English officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral in the Jarrett Cemetery on Burbank Road in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice and the staff of Waters of Roan Highlands for the love and care they have shown.
