I met Paul in the 90s while doing electronic forms for the blind. We had an instant connection.
As time went by we both got busy with other things and only connected at random times.
He was a great advocate and person. He will be missed.

My heart is broken. On August 22, I lost one of my dearest friends-Paul Mimms. And the world lost a quiet giant whose life was a testament to resilience, service, and unwavering love for the blind community.

Paul was a Veteran who served in Vietnam, where he lost sight in one eye. Later, glaucoma took the other, leaving him totally blind. But Paul never let blindness define him-he redefined it for the rest of us.

In the early 1980s, during one of life´s darkest valleys, Paul coined a phrase that became his personal anthem: "Why not me." He didn´t ask "Why me?" in despair-he asked "Why not me?" in courage. He understood that hardship doesn´t discriminate, and instead of retreating, he rose. That phrase became a beacon for anyone facing adversity.

When I met Paul in 1995, he was a counselor for the VA in Kansas City, guiding others with the same grace and grit that marked his own journey. We became fast friends-dreamers, thinkers, and advocates-sharing countless conversations about how technology could better serve the blind. Paul believed in possibility. He believed in people. And he believed in purpose.

His story could touch anyone who heard it. His legacy will live on in the lives he changed, the systems he challenged, and the hearts he lifted.

I pray for his children, his family, and for all of us who feel this loss so deeply. Paul was a great man. And he will be missed-profoundly.

Rest in peace, my friend. Your light still guides us.

With love,
Patrick
