Paul Sargent Obituary

Published by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory - Wilmington on Oct. 19, 2011.
Paul David Sargent, Sr. of Wilmington, Delaware and Gouldsboro, Maine died peacefully in his favorite recliner at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday October 19. Paul was born in Chester, PA, the son of the late Lawrence and Pauline (LaSpina) Sargent. He was a US Army Veteran who proudly served his country in Vietnam & Korea, being honorably discharged in 1968. Throughout the years, Paul honed his computer skills so he could keep in touch with his many long-lost Army buddies. He found great strength in re-connecting with them. Paul worked for Acme Markets for 34 years as a meat cutter. In 2005, he was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and due to his disease he was forced to retire early. Paul never liked being idle, and he was a jack of all trades. He worked several part time jobs including I Goldberg and Dick's Sporting Goods in Wilmington, DE. Most of all, Paul enjoyed spending time at his summer home in Gouldsboro, ME where he loved kayaking, walking along "the point," and enjoying a fine glass of red wine and a cigar with his many friends. He was well known for welcoming everyone to his home. There were no strangers in his life, only friends he never met. He will be remembered fondly for his magnetic personality, his loud whistle and signature greeting of "Yo!", his handlebar mustache, and his Donald Duck impression. His greatest joys in life were his four grandchildren who knew him as "Pop"; they were his world. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Betty Jane; his daughter Anne Marie of Wilmington; his son Paul David, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Wilmington; his four grandchildren Nicholas Paul, Ella MariJane, Paul David III (Gus) and Cathryn Anne; brothers Lawrence of Milford, DE and Edward of Marcus Hook, PA; sisters Dolores MacMillan and her husband Mac of Tempe, Arizona, Jean Campese and her husband Frank of Aston, PA, Lucille Guasperini and her husband Gus of Aston, PA, Helen Simpson and her husband Howe of Boynton Beach, FL, Lorraine Wilwert and her husband John of Brookhaven, PA and Paula Jean Collier and her husband Monty of Show Low, AZ. He is also survived by 45 loving nieces and nephews, many of whom were with their Uncle Paul during his last hours. The family sends a special thank you to the entire nursing staff at Delaware Hospice who was so caring and wonderful with Paul through his last 6 months. Visiting hours will be Friday night October 21 from 7-9 pm at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 am on Saturday morning at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 9 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 or the local hospice in your state.

To the Sargent family, I am sorry to hear of my cousin Paul's passing. He was a very nice person. I didn't have a lot of contact with him, but when I did see him he always took the time to stop and talk to me.
