Paul Milton Schultz, 1928 - 2022, is officially on eternal patrol. Sailor, Rest Your Oar. Paul was a Son, Brother, Submariner, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. God grant him fair winds and following seas.
"The Christmas present that could never be returned," he was born on December 24, 1928, at his Grandparent's home on Hiu Street, Honolulu, Hawaii, to Frank & Ruth Haruko (Kawakami) Schultz. He was a brother to Frank, Joseph, and Ruthie. The Family lived on Horner St, Honolulu, Hawaii, until his family moved to San Diego when he was in third grade. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1946.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. Enamored by his Father's naval career, he became a submariner and chose to be a Torpedoman TM/SS. He proudly served our country for 27 years, retiring as a "Mustang" Lieutenant Commander. He was proud to be the lead in testing the new SUBROC weapon and developing the tactics for its use. Paul held positions of Advanced Undersea Weapons Officer, Security Officer, Nuclear Weapons and Safety Officer, and Chief Inspector for all nuclear weapons capable submarines and submarine tenders. Paul's incredible career was clearly recognized by the Navy as shown by his chest full of Ribbons and Medals, which included the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3), China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2), Korean Service Medal (2), Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal. He was honored to have also earned the title "Golden Shellback," one of the very few in Navy history to be authorized the title. Additionally, he was so very proud to be part of the Schultz Family's legacy of Navy Sailors that spanned five generations, including his father, brothers, sons, nephew, and grandson, with a total of over 175 years of Naval Service to our Nation.
He married Nellie G. Brouilette in 1949. They had four children, Deborah (Simcox), Paul S, Jeffrey B, and Adrienne (Cabel).
In 1983 He married Sylvia (Sally) Kass Loosbrock; of this marriage, he had stepchildren Corey Loosbrock and Tonya Roy.
He is a Grandfather to Amy, Paula, Joshua, Danica, Amanda, Michael, Kae-Sn, Kae-Li, Jeffrey, Andrea, Katie-Lynn, Trent, Corinne, Devin, Gavin K, Gavin A, Damon, and Jocelyn.
He is a Great Grandfather to Cameron, Brianna, Chloe, Avery, Amelia, Sean, Bodhi, Hula, Ava, David, Rhys, Niko, Jeffrey, Ryan, Audrey, and Marilyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Frank, and Joseph, his first wife Nellie, his son Jeffrey, and his grandson Joshua.
Paul was a Life Member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), US Submarine Veterans, and Elks Lodge #1687.
Paul Milton Schultz was a true patriot. He loved his country. His naval career was his pride and joy. He truly loved life and his family. He also loved Chivas Regal.
