Paul Daniel Smith, 81, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at home.
Paul was born in Daniels, WVa on July 16,1943, to Paul Andrew Smith and Eileen Rakes Smith.
Paul married Nettie Goodman on December 7, 1963. They were blessed with 2 daughters: Paula Denese and Melanie Danielle.
Paul was a lifelong resident of the Shady Spring, WVa area and was the owner/operator of Paul Smith Plumbing and Heating for over 50 years. He served in the Army National Guard for 21 years before retiring from service in 1986 as an E-6 Sta Sergeant. One of his favorite memories of serving his country was his trip overseas to Germany. He loved telling about the many castles there and the many beers that he drank with his buddies. He also loved square dancing and meeting new people. He and Nettie have been square dancing since 1967 and Paul also served as President of the Greenbrier Valley Squares (square dancing club). He enjoyed fishing at the lake, boating and watching all of the wildlife visit - especially themany ducks and Canadian geese that came every year.
Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nettie Jane Smith and his daughter, Melanie Vanderpool (Leddy) of Knoxville, TN. He also loved his grandchildren immensely - Kamela Johnson (Brett) or Rapid City, SD; Khayen Vanderpool (Bridget) of Bison, SD; and Kellen Vanderpool of Sturgis, SD and his great grandchildren, Joslyn, Burke, Krew and Via. He was also very appreciative and grateful for his long time employees and friends, Robert Perry and Kenny Bledsoe.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula; his sister, Linda Sue Hunt; his brother-in-law Steve Hunt; his 2 nephews, Matthew Maciejczyk and Steven Hunt.
Services will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 3pm at the Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, WVa. Friends and family may call starting at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 99, Ghent WV 25843. The family simply could not have asked for better support, service and care from the amazing individuals at GVFD that we now consider friends.
