Paul Philipp Steinhauer

Paul passed away July 12, 2024, at Rose Medical Center, Denver. Paul was born in Chicago on July 4, 1947, to Karl Frederick and Margaret DiVall Steinhauer. Paul was an only child and grew up in Des Plaines, IL. Paul often talked about Goldie, the very special dachshund he grew up with. He graduated from Maine South HS Park Ridge, IL in 1965 and moved west to attend the University of Denver obtaining a BS in Business Administration in 1971. Paul became very involved with state and national politics while in college, campaigning in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He met many of his closest friends, to this day, as students at the University of Denver who also worked on these campaigns with Paul and enjoyed a party or two on election nights. 

Paul is survived by his University of Denver Family, including Jim & Diane (Skowron) Evans, Sarah Tholen, Becky Buthman Mushett (Mike), Sheila Sagor Bayens, Christine Peacock Powers, and the late Clayton Powers. Paul was very close to and loved by his “adopted” children, Michael Evans, Patrick Evans (Nicole), and Daniel Evans (Danielle). He had a special place in his heart for his goddaughter, Jenny Evans Bennett (Jake). He will be greatly missed by his long-time Windsor Gardens neighbors, Kay Goolde and Armando Flores, along with his boyhood friend, Phil Heller.

Paul had a great wit and a very dry sense of humor. Paul was never too busy to help friends, organize a trip to The Fort Restaurant in Morrison, or jaunts to Colorado Springs, Taos or Santa Fe, drive a carpool, or take his friends’ children on wonderful field trips during school breaks. Paul will also be remembered for the many dinners for his college friends of “alley scrapings” his signature dish. College friends remember his massive 1960s Chrysler New Yorker that could hold more friends than there were seat belts!

Paul found his career niche as a hotel desk clerk. Having traveled a great deal of the world, he found great satisfaction in helping other travelers enjoy their visits to wherever Paul was living at the time: Chicago, Denver, Baton Rouge, LA, Manchester, NH, Providence, Rl, or San Diego, CA.

Having never married, Paul wanted to retire with his college friends in Denver so he returned to Denver in 2003 during the epic St. Patrick’s Day blizzard. He moved to Windsor Gardens and became very active there. He volunteered for many years, driving to hospitals and medical offices, picking up donations with Project C.U.R.E. Project C.U.R.E. is the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries around the world. When he retired back to Denver, he especially enjoyed working during six regular sessions of the Colorado General Assembly (2004- 2009) as secretary to three legislators (one at a time).

Paul did not want a memorial service and in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Paul’s name to Project C.U.R.E, International Headquarters 10377 E Geddes Ave #200, Centennial, CO 80112. Project C.U.R.E. is a 501c3 charity and is the recipient of the GuideStar Exchange Platinum Seal, the Charity Navigator Four-Star Rating and ranked by Forbes as one of the 20 Most Efficient Large U.S. Charities.
