Paul Tyma, PhD Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Higgins Memorial Home - Freehold from Jun. 27 to Jun. 28, 2025.
Paul Daniel Tyma

Paul D. Tyma, 71, passed away at home on June 26, 2025 with his family at his side. He was born in Chicago, IL and lived in Illinois through college.

Always an avid scholar, Paul earned a PhD in chemistry and moved with his wife Kelly to New Jersey to begin a career at Bell Labs, Murray Hill. He finished his career with Lucent Technologies, developing and managing telecommunication and networking businesses. In retirement, Paul worked with non-profit arts organizations and as a lacrosse official, while also serving on the rules committee of the NJILOA.

Paul had a great sense of humor and was a pun-loving guy. He was passionate about many things – his expanding family, Lake Michigan, cooking, music and politics – and he especially enjoyed brewing good beer. He set up a home brewery in the basement and named it "Cold Snack Brewing."

Paul leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Kelly (nee Qualls), his loving son Andrew, daughter-in-law Ashley, and his cherished grandchildren Evelyn, Nathaniel, and Colin. "Pop" was their greatest admirer and cheerleader. He is survived by his siblings, Steve, Larry, Christine and Susan.

Visitation will be at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold, NJ on Tuesday, July 1st from 5 to 7 pm with a brief service following. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Arbor Day Foundation or the planting of a tree in his memory will be appreciated.
