Paul Waite Obituary

Paul Roy Waite

In Loving Memory

Centerville, UT-Paul Roy Waite, 76, passed away peacefully August 31, 2023, in Bountiful, UT, after a valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Paul was born in Oakland, California on April 29, 1947, to Dan C. and Marion Estelle Aga Waite. He was the second of 5 children.

Paul attended schools in Martinez, CA and graduated from Alhambra High School where he was a student athlete participating in football, basketball, and baseball. Paul continued his love of sports in college and played football at Taft Junior College and Weber State, where he set many records. He graduated with a BS in Physical Education from Weber in 1970.

Paul met the love of his life, Julie Knudsen, at Weber State and asked her to marry him 12 days later. In his words, "When you know, you know." They were married on November 23, 1968, and settled in Centerville, UT where they raised their family. They were married for 54 years.

After college, Paul signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent and played preseason ball, but did not make the final roster, although he continued to be a lifelong fan.

In August 1970, Paul joined the Utah National Guard and concluded his military career with the rank of Colonel, retiring in December of 2000. His military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (6), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Special Forces Tab, Pathfinder Badge, and Master Parachutist Badge with 137 completed jumps. Paul graduated from the United States Army War College in 1992. Most of his military career was spent with the 19th Special Forces. He served as Group Commander of the 19th and spent time overseas training troops.

Paul's civilian career encompassed 41 years serving students and families in Davis School District. He was a secondary educator teaching at Viewmont and Bountiful High Schools where he taught history, physical education, and weight training. Paul was the head football coach at Bountiful High School for 10 years and coached a State Championship team. While teaching, Paul completed his Master of Education from BYU and was hired as an Assistant Principal and then Principal at Viewmont. Paul retired in 2012 as an Assistant Superintendent with an Ed.D. in Administration and Leadership from the University of Utah.

Paul thoroughly enjoyed retirement spending his time playing golf, golf, and golf, had season tickets to the University of Utah football games (for more years than we can remember) and spending time with family and friends.

Paul is survived by his wife Julie and most favorite child (whom he had to fight for her love and attention from) "O" the cat. Daughters, Kelly Mattena (Mark), Shelby Kleyn (Gerald), grandchildren, Mitchell, Katherine, Dallas, Anders, Parker, Sophie, and Linnea. Siblings, Melody (Melvin) Hillier, Carol Small, Danielle (Stephen) Sneeringer, sister-in-law Myrlai Waite, sister-in-law Kristin Castleman, and cherished nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents Dan and Estelle Waite, brother Art Waite, daughter Stacy Waite and brother-in-law Lorin Castleman.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023, in the Russon Mortuary Chapel, 295 N. Main Street, Bountiful, UT. Coach Waite was my weight training & football coach for 3 years at Bountiful High School, and he was an inspiration to all of his students and football players. He was always very positive and encouraging with everyone. He made me feel really good about myself, and he encouraged me to always do my best. I've always had great memories of him, and I'm very glad that he was my coach. I'm so very sorry to find out that he has passed. My thoughts and condolences are with his family.

My funniest memory of Paul is when we were in the Marianas around 1985. Paul was the Commander A/1/19 SFGA and I was his XO. Paul learned that Cabbage Patch dolls were on special in the Guam PX. There was a limit of two per customer so he needed an extra hand to get three for his girls. He enlisted me to pick up one for his girls and I could use my allowance to get one for my daughter Angela.
We waded in with all the other shoppers and elbowed into the fray. I remember the big guy yelling, "Look I have one with a binkey, get the binkeys!" This set off a feeding frenzy, but the two Green Berets overcame hopeless odds and came away with our four prized dolls.
I miss Paul dearly and regard him as one of the most impactful mentors in my military career.

I´m so sorry to hear of Paul´s illness and passing. What a great man he was! Enjoyed having him as a VP when I a student at Viewmont although he was scary when you were caught sluffing! Haha. Later I was able to work with him as a coach and student teacher at Viewmont! He was a fantastic support of a new young coach/teacher! We need more educators/administrators like him! I have fond memories and am grateful for the opportunity to know Paul, his darling wife Julie and talented daughter Shelby! My sincere condolences and love to the whole family!

I´m sad that Paul suffered with dementia for several years after serving as my principal at Viewmont High. He was one of the best. While strongly interested in the sports programs, he didn´t play favorites. As English Department head, I always knew Paul had my back. If I could make a case for whatever the department needed, he would find a way to fund it, if it required money. If it required curriculum adjustments that would improve what we were trying to accomplish, we could count on his support no matter what obstacles might arise. He treated all teachers with respect as professionals, and if there were any need for dealing with staffing problems, he made corrections kindly but firmly. I have tremendous respect for him as my boss and my friend. I miss him greatly.

Paul has always been an amazing man in my eyes. He was a huge and constant support of Bountiful PTSA.
As a teacher, Paul always supported and went the extra mile to make a teacher´s life better. I am grateful for him and his kindness.
Sweet Julie, Kelly and Shelby, you were always the light in his life. You will miss his presence and goodness.
I am so grateful I know each of you and our families are friends.
Wishing you comfort and love.
He will always be with you and your grandchildren.

Was coached by Paul in the class of 82. Was a great coach and was good to us. We were very successful that year losing the state championship by 3 points to Roy High School. Grateful he was my football coach as a young man.
