Pauline Purcell Worthy, 78, of Leesburg, GA died Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Willson Hospice House. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Leesburg. Dr. Josh Posey and Rev. Bobby Harrell will officiate. Following the funeral, a private family interment service will follow in the Leesburg City Cemetery.
Born in Tattnall County to the late Lawton and Edith Davis Purcell, she grew up in Glennville, GA prior to making Leesburg, GA her home in 1968. Mrs. Worthy graduated from Glennville High School in 1964 as salutatorian of her class. Having a love for learning, she continued her education, ultimately achieving multiple levels of degrees within the field of education. During her 30 years serving as a teacher and media specialist in Lee County she influenced the lives of many students. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Leesburg, the Jimmie Brown Sunday School Class, and served many years in the children’s department.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Lucius Gordon Worthy, her brother Paul Purcell, and her sister-in-law Helen Kennedy. Survivors include her children, Sarah Worthy of Lee County GA, and Mark Worthy of Ray City, GA, her grandchildren Carolyn, Lilah Kate, Melanie, and Jackson Worthy of Ray City, GA, a sister-in-law and her husband, Eve Purcell and Terry Carter of Waycross, GA, a brother-in-law, LaVan Kennedy and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, September 23, 2024, at Mathew’s Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the First Baptist Church of Leesburg, PO Box 1009 / 153 Main Street, Leesburg, GA 31763.
