It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peggy (Willis) Merkin, who left us peacefully at Ridgewood Health Campus "Legacy" in Lawrenceburg, IN, on March 27, 2025, at the age of 86. Peggy was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose spirit illuminated the lives of those around her.
Born on October 12, 1938, in El Paso, Texas, Peggy was the beloved daughter of Woodrow Nelson and Eufaula (Holden) Willis. Her early years were spent in various towns across Texas, where she blossomed into a remarkable person. After graduating from high school, she embraced motherhood and raised a beautiful family, forging cherished memories along the way. Over the years, Peggy's journey took her to Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, and Florida, where she built a rich tapestry of experiences and connections.
Peggy's professional life began at Standard Oil in a secretarial role, and later she found fulfillment working at JCPenney while her children pursued their academic adventures. Beyond her work, Peggy dedicated herself to her community as a Girl Scout leader, showcasing her nurturing spirit, and enjoyed a vibrant life filled with activities like bowling, tennis, and golf. Her creative talents were boundless; Peggy was an extraordinary quilter, doll maker, and painter, and she found joy in needlework, silk ribbon crafts, and cross-stitch, often using her talents to adorn her home and provide thoughtful gifts to loved ones.
Traveling brought Peggy immense joy, whether exploring new places with family, connecting with the Red Hat Society, or sharing laughter and friendship with her quilt groups. Her heart was full as she celebrated life's moments. As a grandmother, Peggy held a special place in her heart for her grandsons, Brandon and Kyle. She took great delight in attending their baseball and basketball games, creating magical Christmases with gingerbread houses, and sharing playful summer days filled with games and imaginative adventures.
Peggy is lovingly remembered by her children, Eufaula Jean Merkin of Georgetown, TX; Richard Charles Merkin and daughter-in-law Shelley of Merritt Island, FL; her grandsons, Brandon and Kyle of Hebron, KY; and her sister, Joyce Pluma Vaughan of Arizona. She was proceeded in death by her parents: Woodrow Nelson Willis in 1982, Eufaula Holden Willis in 1998. As well as her brother Woodrow ' Allen' Willis in 1994.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Ridgewood Health Campus, who have provided loving care to Peggy over the past eight years. Their unwavering support granted the family peace and comfort during this time. The family's deepest appreciation also extends to her hospice nurse, Jenny, whose extraordinary care and kindness brought solace to Peggy and her loved ones.
In honor of Peggy's life, private services will be held, and the family will bury her remains at a later date. They welcome all to celebrate her spirit and legacy in their hearts. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to either Ridgewood Health Campus "Legacy," Interim Hospice, or the
Alzheimer's Association, organizations that provided support and care to Peggy.
Peggy Merkin will be profoundly missed, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
