Mrs. Peggy Joy Smith, 85, died Saturday, November 1, 2025, at The Pinnacle in Oxford. The funeral service will be Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Fish Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Peggy was born on February 24, 1940, to the late Leroy "Pete" Duncan and Eura Faye "Jip" Waits Duncan. She was the loving wife to her late husband of 64 years, Mr. Lemuel Lee "Red" Smith. Together, they raised their children and found their greatest joy in watching each of their children's families grow as they welcomed their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their love of family was on constant display through their tightly held traditions of sharing meals together on Sunday after church and Monday steak nights. Throughout 52 years of their lives, Mrs. Peggy and Mr. Red, affectionately known as MeMe and Papaw, welcomed hundreds of babies and children, including their own grandchildren, into their home-based daycare and loved each child as their own. Daily, they provided warm, homecooked meals and a nurturing environment for little ones. They were faithful members of North Oxford Baptist Church where they served in the nursery. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Peggy was preceded in death by a son, Rusty Smith; a sister Patricia Duncan and three brothers, Robert, Kenneth and Charles Duncan.
Mrs. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Judy Smith Mills and her husband, Jimmy of Abbeville, MS; a son, Don Smith and his wife, Penny of Oxford, MS; six grandchildren, Joy Rowsey, Jake Mills, Thad Smith, Caroline Smith, Ryan Smith and Elizabeth-Anne Sims and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Smith's memory may be made to North Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1700, Oxford, MS 38655.
