Penny Sue Lopez of Groesbeck passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Limestone Medical Center.
Visitation is scheduled from 1-3 PM on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Groesbeck Funeral Home. Afterward, a graveside service will take place under the Faulkenberry Cemetery Pavilion, officiated by Dr. Keith Collier.
Pallbearers include Robby Cowey, Kevin Gray, Cesar Lopez, Wyatt Castaneda, Xavier Cowey, and Chris Cowey.
Penny was born on December 7, 1965, in New Braunfels to Cecil Cowey and Vivian Wetz. After grade school she attended Navarro College and obtained her LVN in 2002. Penny spent many years working for Girling Healthcare based out of San Antonio and Temple and when she moved back to Groesbeck in 2009 and worked for both Manor and Winsor Nursing Homes until finding her Nursing work “home” servicing the Limestone County families at the WIC office in 2016.
Penny met the love of her life, Leonard, in 1988 and although the timing wasn’t right, fate had other plans and in 2008 their paths crossed again, and they have spent every day together since. Although his entire life was in New Braunfels, he did not hesitate to pick up and move to Groesbeck with her in 2009. He supported her in everything she did from her hectic hours in the nursing field, to chasing her kids at their sporting events, to the women’s support group she helped co-found, “Chubby Buddies”. She hosted countless events at her home where you could find Leonard catering to the women while they filled their home with weight loss advice, prayer requests, life-long friendships, and endless laughs. That group of women meant the world to her, and she was honored to have spent many years surrounded by so much support. When she wasn’t busy being a nurse to many or a host to the “Chubby Buddies”, she was devoting her time to her biggest fan, Leonard. Their common love and passion for travel brought them many fond memories all over the world. Leonard always ensured her “bucket list” locations were met with visits to places like: Las Vegas, Dollywood, Boston, New York, Pigeon Forge, Memphis, and Nashville. But you could not think of Penny and Leonard without thinking about their true obsession with Carnival Cruises! They went on so many cruises, we couldn’t even begin to list all the places they had been to, but they enjoyed every single one! Whether they brought friends or family along, or cruised solo, they weren’t off the boat before their next cruise was planned and booked! The memories they made together traveling the world and ensuring she had a smile on her face is something we appreciate and will all cherish forever.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Cecil Cowey and Vivian Wetz and two brothers, Larry Mertz and Rocky Cowey, niece Staci Montgomery and her dear aunt Margaret Cowey.
Penny is survived by her husband, Leonard Gomez, Jr.; sons, Connor Kevin Gray and wife Shelly, Robby Cowey and wife Stefanie, Casey Witt, Leonard Gomez III, Cesar Lopez, and daughter, Marlena Lopez. Grandchildren include Christopher, Hailey, Xavier, Wyatt, Sofia, Elijah, Everly, Trenton, and Landon; sister, Cheryl Sterling and brother Randy Mertz.
