Dr. Percy Adams George
Percy Adams George passed away peacefully February 19, 2025, the evening of his 85th birthday, at his home in Latta, SC. He was the beloved husband of Millie, father of Christy and Greg, and proud Papa of Percy ("Perc!") Kathryn ("Kakarack!")and Henry ("Heinrich!")
Percy was born on February 19, 1940, in Sellers, SC - the eldest of four - to Edna Earle and Lide George. He attended Latta High School, where he graduated Valedictorian of his senior class in 1958. He spent four years in the US Air Force where his aptitude for languages took him to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Nine months of intensive training in Russian was followed by a Cold War military tour in Turkey and Germany. He then enrolled at the University of South Carolina (Florence and then Columbia) where he graduated in 1966 with a BS in Biology.
During his time at USC, he met the love of his life, Mildred Rogers of Zion, SC. They married December 26, 1964, at Zion Southern Methodist Church. Daughter Christina Marie was born in 1966, and son, John Gregory followed in 1968. Millie taught secretarial science, while Percy, then enrolled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, studied to become a doctor. He graduated in 1970 and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
Percy and his family then packed up and moved across the country to Travis Air Force Base in CA for his second tour with the USAF which included an Internal Medicine residency at David Grant Medical Center and a year overseas at Udorn, Thailand in '74/'75. After completing his military duty, he went into private practice with the Intercommunity Medical Group in Fairfield, CA for 7 years. The years in California were magical ones for his family. They camped and sailed and skied and flew up and down the California Central Valley.
In 1984, Percy and his family returned home to South Carolina where he practiced medicine in Conway until his retirement in 2005.
Percy and Millie then retired to Latta SC where they moved and lovingly restored a Civil War era farmhouse. They lived and entertained family and friends at their cherished home for 20 years until Percy's death.
His hobbies were many, but in particular, Percy enjoyed camping, sailing, flying, snow skiing, cooking, gardening, travel, and had an affinity for the natural sciences. His fluency in Russian and German remained lifelong passions. He was happiest sharing all of the above with his family and instilled in them his love for learning and adventure.
Percy has often been described as "the smartest boy ever to graduate from Latta High". While this distinction might be up for debate (though you'd lose because he was on his college debate team), it cannot be denied that he was the finest of doctors, the most honorable of men, and the most loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather to grace his patch of Oak Grove.
In addition to his wife and children, Percy is survived by his sister, Ann Calhoun, his brother, David George, and his grandchildren, Percy Adams George III, Kathryn Harley Roberts, and Henry Alan Roberts. He is predeceased by his brother Malcolm George and his sister Mary Ellen George.
A memorial service will he held on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in
Marion, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00-3:00 PM in the Church Sanctuary.
