Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne CountyPerry Ray Johnson, aged 80, of Waynesboro, TN, peacefully passed away on March 4, 2026. Born on April 23, 1945, in Clendenin, WV, he was the beloved son of the late Toni A. and Oleta Gray Johnson.
Ray served his country honorably in the United States Air Force for four years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. On February 8, 1992, he celebrated a beautiful union with his loving wife, Sharon Rae Smith. Together, they created a life filled with love, adventure, and shared passions.
Ray dedicated many years to his career, first installing phone equipment for Western Electric and then transitioning to Lucent Technology, where he proudly served as an instructor. His commitment to his work was matched only by his devotion to his community as a member of Zion Baptist Church in Waynesboro and the cherished Singing River Strummers Group.
A true jack of all trades, Ray's insatiable curiosity and passion for learning allowed him to become well-versed in many fields, and he took great joy in sharing his knowledge with others. A gifted musician at heart, he played a variety of instruments including the violin, viola, banjo, and mountain dulcimer. Ray and Sharon loved to travel in their RV, visiting music festivals where they would share their love for music and camaraderie.
An adventurous spirit, Ray held a private pilot license and took great delight in flying his own plane, whisking Sharon away on countless adventures. He also embraced his creativity through quilting, woodworking, and flying model airplanes. A fan of the outdoors, Ray enjoyed archery, crafting his own bows, and exploring the beauty of nature on hunting trips.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Rae Johnson of Waynesboro, TN; son, Brian Ray Johnson (Amy) of OH; daughter, Jamie Johnson; other children, Jimmy Graves of OR, Robby Graves (Gypsy) of WA, Melody Beebe (Richard) of WA, and Jody Bales (Kevin) of OR; sister, Joyce Linger (Neal) of WV; 8 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, John Johnson; and Ray’s twin brother, Roy Johnson.
Ray Johnson's life was rich with joy, creativity, and love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his warm spirit and the countless lives he touched.
