Peter Hayden Armacost embodied the very essence of dedication - to his family, his community, and the world of higher education. Born in New York City on July 12, 1935, he became a widely respected academic leader whose integrity, vision and warmth touched countless lives. He died at the age of 90, just six weeks after celebrating his milestone birthday with 52 family members, whose presence was a reflection of the deep love he gave and received throughout his life.

Peter was the son of George Henry Armacost, President of the University of Redlands, and Verda Gae (Hayden) Armacost. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Denison University, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Peter's career spanned 43 years of continuous presidential leadership - the longest tenure in the history of American higher education at the time of his retirement. Known nationally as an innovative and student-centered president, he devoted his life to expanding opportunities and strengthening the institutions he served.

In 1967, at 32 years old, Peter became President of Ottawa University, making him the youngest university president in the nation at the time. At Ottawa, he led the development of a nationally acclaimed academic program and developed the College Without Campus program, which increased enrollment by 3,000 students over several years.

In 1977, Peter took the helm as President of Eckerd College, a role he held until 2000. Under his leadership, enrollment grew by nearly 80%, new academic programs - including Marine Science - were introduced, and eight major buildings were constructed. During this period, he also founded a pioneering lifelong learning initiative: in 1982, he inaugurated the Academy of Senior Professionals (ASPEC), a program that would grow into a celebrated Eckerd tradition, offering seniors intellectually stimulating and intergenerational opportunities rooted in curiosity and community engagement. Also during his presidency, the Leadership Development Institute was founded, as well as the Program for Experienced Learners. In recognition of his lasting impact, the college later built and dedicated a library in his name - the Peter H. Armacost Library - a space designed to foster research, collaborative learning and community.

Following his time at Eckerd, Peter embraced an international calling as Rector (President) of Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan. Over a decade of service, he guided the university through a remarkable period of renewal - launching a four-year baccalaureate program unique in Pakistan, adding five new Master's degree programs, nearly doubling enrollment, recruiting a faculty with a higher percentage of PhDs in all but three universities in the country, and expanding its facilities with eight new major buildings. A centerpiece of this transformation was the construction of the Armacost Science Building, inaugurated in 2010 and dedicated in his honor.

In addition to these presidencies, Peter gave generously of his time to civic, religious, and professional causes. Over the years, he served as President of the Pinellas Suncoast Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Bi-racial Committee to Review the Desegregation and Busing Plan of Pinellas County Schools, Chairman of the Florida chapter of the Young Presidents Organization and President of the 1.6 million member American Baptist Churches in the USA. Regionally, he served as President of the Southern University Conference, the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities and the Associated Independent Colleges of Kansas, and Chairman of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida and of the Kansas City Regional Council for Higher Education. Nationally, he served on the board and executive committee of the Association of American Colleges, the National Association of Independent Colleges, the Council of Independent Colleges and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. His colleagues remember him not only for his steady leadership, but also for his unwavering belief in the transformative power of education.

Above all, Peter's greatest legacy was his family. Long before it was common, he delighted in the hands-on joys of fatherhood - changing diapers, patiently teaching his children and grandchildren to type, water ski, or play a sport; and showing up for every milestone. Known to his family as "Baba," he created cherished traditions, including taking each child and grandchild on a special weekend trip to New York City. He believed that love was best expressed through presence, and never missed an important event, nor turned down a chance to try something new–even ziplining for the first time at the tender age of 87. To his family, he was not only a leader and teacher, but also a steady source of wisdom, faith, joy, adventure and unconditional love.

He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of 32 years, Mary-Linda, and was preceded in death by his beloved first wife of 34 years, Suzanne, the devoted mother of his four children, Martha (Tom) Jamieson, David (Brenda) Armacost, Sarah (Jimmy) Holliman and Rebecca Armacost. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, Ashley, Drew, Kali, Kirsten, Adam, Connor, Chase, Hayden, Kendall, Sam, Ashley and Jackson; and 10 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. Peter was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Armacost, and is survived by siblings Samuel (Mary Jane) Armacost, Mary (Jack) Hulst, and sister-in-law Bonny (Mrs. Michael Armacost).

A celebration of life will be held in his honor at First Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg, Florida on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Rotary Foundation.
