Peter Blume Obituary

Peter P. Blume Jr., 53, of Vernon, beloved husband of Wendy (Wilmot) Blume died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Rockville General Hospital.

Peter was born in Hartford, on Dec. 24, 1968, the son of Carolyn (Bolk) Blume and the late Peter P. Blume. He grew up in South Windsor and was a graduate of South Windsor High School with the class of 1987. Peter went on to study physical education at Eastern Connecticut State University and graduated in 1991. He worked as a physical education teacher for 17 years, dividing his time between Union and Ashford Elementary School. He was Ashford's boys basketball coach and enjoyed working their WINGS Program, as well as cooking for Union's annual spaghetti supper. Peter married the love of his life, Wendy Wilmot on Nov. 16, 1996. They lived in Ellington for several years, before settling in Vernon where they raised a family. Peter was extremely involved in his children's lives and cherished time spent with them as he coached their sports teams throughout the years. He volunteered with the Vernon Little League, Vernon Soccer, Vernon Basketball and served on several boards for each throughout the years. Peter was an active member of the Vernon Fire Department, where he served as lieutenant to the Vernon Fire Police. He enjoyed bike riding in his younger years and was instrumental in organizing Steeles Crossing, an annual Thanksgiving bike ride. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, Packers, Manchester City, as well as the UConn basketball teams. Peter was involved with HAM Radio and a member of the Vernon CERT Emcom. A kind, caring, loving and extremely devoted family man he will be dearly missed. Peter will always be our "gentle giant" and the heart of Vernon.

Along with his wife, Wendy Blume of Vernon; and his mother, Carolyn Blume of South Windsor; he leaves his children, Timothy Blume and Allison Blume both of Vernon; his brother, David Blume and his wife, Kristin of East Windsor; his sister, Kristin McCauley and her husband, Charles of Vernon; his mother-in-law, Judy Brown of Manchester; sisters-in-law, Melissa Johnson of Manchester, and Amanda Leibowitz and her husband, Greg of Moodus; and his nieces and nephews, Matthew, Ryan, Ashley, Hannah, Katie, and Noah.

His family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 9, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 10, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home. For those who wish to honor Pete's life, you know he was the man in shorts, year round. We ask you to wear shorts or your favorite sports jersey, as there is nothing Peter hated more than dressing up.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Education Fund for Tim and Allie Blume at Windsor Federal Savings.

We had known Peter for many years since his youth, reconnecting with him when he became the physical education teacher at the Union School. Our children were blessed to have him as an instructor and friend. "Gentle Giant" epitomizes Peter Blume Jr. He had a wonderful way with the youngsters and they loved him!
Peter volunteered his time cooking to a full house at the annual Union School Association spaghetti dinner held at The Congregational Church of Union, knowing that his efforts would help raise the necessary funds needed to send the 8th grade class on an annual field trip. Peter was always willing to lend a helping hand and volunteer his time. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Our sincere condolences to the entire Blume Family. Rest in Peace, Peter.

Wendy,
Thoughts with you and your family during this time. I was extremely fortunate to first meet Pete freshman year at Eastern. I have a lot of great memories of Pete from those years. He was a gentle giant and all those who met him certainly will remember him, I know I always will.
