Peter Brankovic, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Born to Eli and Mildred Brankovic on August 24, 1942, Peter's 82 years of life were marked by adventure, courage, and an indomitable spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
His early years were shared with his loving parents and siblings, and though he was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Stella Funtukis and Eleanor White, his memories with them remained a source of joy throughout his life. He is also survived by his brother Michael (Diane) Birach.
Peter married the love of his life, Shirley, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey of 58 years of marriage. Their loving partnership was blessed with four children: Melissa (Jay) Verlinden, Janice (Patrick) Potter, Peter (Rosa) Brankovic Jr., and Amanda Marko. Peter's legacy continued to flourish with his grandchildren Brendan Kelso, Jacob Kelso, Samantha Potter, Zachary Potter, Mia Marko, Ellie Marko, and Lily Mae DeCraene, and his great-grandchildren Charlie Kelso, Bennett Kelso, and Amelia Kelso, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Peter's passions were as vibrant as his personality. He had a profound love for Harley Davidson motorcycles, a passion that often found him on the open road, with the wind in his hair and a sense of freedom in his heart. His love for his cats, Lucy and Sassy, was equally evident in the gentle care and affection he showed them. A true enthusiast, Peter also enjoyed muscle cars, finding pleasure in the power and beauty of these classic vehicles.
Travel was another of Peter's delights, particularly his trips to West Virginia, where he relished in the beauty and serenity of the mountains. He had an innate ability to connect with people wherever he went, making friends easily with his warm and engaging personality. A people person through and through, Peter's social nature was one of his most defining characteristics.
Peter's adventurous life was given a renewed sense of purpose 16 years ago when he became the grateful recipient of a heart transplant. This incredible gift not only extended his life but also provided him with a new outlook, one that he embraced with gratitude and an even greater zest for living.
Those who knew Peter would describe him as a man who lived life to the fullest. His adventurous spirit never waned, and his courage in the face of adversity was truly inspiring. Peter's spirited nature was evident in the way he approached each day with enthusiasm and joy, regardless of the challenges he faced.
Peter Brankovic's life was a testament to the power of living with an open heart and an adventurous soul. As we remember him, we are reminded to cherish the moments that bring us happiness, to connect deeply with those we love, and to approach life with the same courage and spirit that Peter exemplified.
Visitation for Peter will take place on Thursday, May 8, 2025 from 3:00-7:00pm; with a Service at 6:30pm at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park.
