Peter C. "Pete" Buhler Sr. of
Weston, MA, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on February 27, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Buhler; daughter Brenda Buhler of San Francisco; son Peter Buhler Jr. and daughter-in-law Deb Buhler of
Wellesley, MA; granddaughter Reese Buhler; grandson Mathis Buhler; and stepmother Carol Buhler and brother Robert Buhler, both of
Cutchogue, NY. He is pre-deceased by his father, E. Carll Buhler; mother Bernice Buhler; and sister Andrea Solms.
Pete was raised in
Great Neck, New York. Upon his graduation from Great Neck High School in 1951, he received an ROTC scholarship through the U.S. Navy to attend Dartmouth College, from which he graduated in 1955, and went on to earn his master's degree in civil engineering from the Thayer School of Engineering (Dartmouth College) in 1956.
Pete's active-duty commitment to the Navy began in Alaska, where he continued a long- distance romance with Betty, his neighbor from Great Neck, and proposed marriage by written letter. After a December 1956 wedding in
Manhasset, NY, they set off on a cross-country road trip to California where Betty remained while Pete resumed his service in Alaska. Fond stories of their early travels together would become the backdrop for their lifelong love for one another and our country.
Throughout his life, Pete remained grateful to the Navy for his education, the experience he gained in the Civil Engineer Corps, and the opportunity to see Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. He was honorably discharged as a commissioned officer after 3 years of active-duty service and 3 years in the Naval Reserves.
Pete then began his professional career as an engineer at Bechtel Corporation, managing the construction of client industrial plants before joining McKinsey & Co as a management consultant. He later joined Continental Investment Corporation, where he established two new investment management firms before becoming a vice president at Fidelity Investments; while there, he helped shift the company's mutual fund distribution strategy to direct marketing through advertising and the mail. He eventually fulfilled his dream to work for himself, maintaining his own wealth management and retirement planning consultancy for the 25 years preceding his retirement.
Pete spent most of his adult years in
Weston, MA, where he and Betty raised Brenda and Pete Jr. before welcoming grandchildren Reese and Mathis into the world. Along with his unwavering love and dedication to his family, he will always be remembered for his warmth, curiosity, patriotism, and love for singing, guitar playing, swimming, running, and animals.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00pm at the Weston United Methodist Church, 377 North Avenue,
Weston, MA.
