Peter Daniel Demakis

It is with deep sorrow that we announce, Peter Daniel Demakis Sr., aged 80, of Baldwin Harbor, NY, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Portland, Maine to Ida and John Demakis, Peter was a remarkable individual molded by his passion for sports. He was a celebrated athlete in his youth, having excelled as a star quarterback at Portland High School. His talent on the football field laid the foundation for his success as an educator and coach. He earned a full football scholarship to Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he honed his skills even more. He completed his Master's Degree in physical education at Brooklyn College and began imparting his knowledge to students in the wider community. Peter dedicated over 40 years of his life to teaching and coaching children in the community, becoming one of the most respected physical education teachers of his time. His students referred to him as "Mr. D," and throughout his career, he inspired the next generation of athletes and went above and beyond to be a mentor and friend to his students. Peter's passion for athletics led him to become one of the top 10 gymnastics coaches in the country, and he was a qualified Olympic gymnastics judge. In his free time, he coached high school soccer and even led his team to a top 5 ranking in the country. He was a man who lived an extraordinary life as a sports enthusiast. Peter is survived by his former wife, Jacqueline, and their sons, Peter Junior and Michael, as well as his brother Stratos and wife Carol. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Faith, Finley, and Massimo, and great-grandson Adonis. His passing will leave a void in the hearts of everyone whose life he touched. Peter's legacy as an exceptional athlete, an inspiring coach, and a devoted teacher will live on, and continue as a testament to his unwavering dedication to his students and to the sports he so loved.
