Obituary published on Legacy.com by Matt Funeral Service, Inc. - Utica on Mar. 2, 2026.
Mr. Peter M. Edic, 66, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 28, 2026, with loving family by his side, after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
Pete was born in
Utica, NY, December 25, 1959, a son of the late James and Agnes (Linder) Edic. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, class of 1978. By the special grace of God, he had the ability and opportunity to further his education by receiving his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology in 1987 from Mohawk Valley Community College, a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from Syracuse University, and a Master's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Pete later received his Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Pete was employed as a Principal Electrical Engineer at G.E. Global Research in
Niskayuna, NY for 25 years, until his retirement in 2021, researching both medical and industrial applications of CT imaging. He also served as an adjunct professor for the Electrical and Computer Engineering program at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in
Marcy, NY for 20 years.
Pete was an avid runner and ran many road races over the years, his favorites include the Boilermaker in
Utica, NY, and the Mountain Goat Run in
Syracuse, NY. He also enjoyed woodworking and fused-glass kiln work. Pete enjoyed watching baseball and was a big fan of the New York Yankees. A hard worker, Pete was never one to sit idle and always willing to lend a hand when his family and friends needed him. A man of deep faith, Pete was a communicant of Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish. Pete was ever mindful of the grace of God the Father to give him the right to be His son; of Jesus who ransomed his debt and was Rabbi, brother, and friend on his walk through this life; and of the Holy Spirit who continually offered grace with His special gifts.
A humble man, Pete considered himself to be very blessed, and one of his greatest joys in life was the relationship he shared with goddaughter, Jennifer Marie Rech, her husband, Kevin, and their family. He thought of her like a daughter and they shared many cherished memories over the years. She was a great source of strength for Pete throughout his illness. Karen Czerkies, Jenn and Kevin Rech, Jen Blue, Sylvia Roch, and Rusty Blue were Pete's "adoptive" families – offering continual love and support and opening their homes to him daily – allowing him to share intimately in the lives of their children. Only God could have woven this special fabric of Pete's life – grace upon grace; he is forever grateful.
A beloved brother, uncle, and friend, Pete will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Pete is survived by his siblings, Kathleen Alexander, Joseph and Kathleen Edic, Sister Margaret Edic CSJ, Joan Vivacqua, Robert and Lisa Edic, Raymond and Dorothy Edic, Richard and Michelle Edic, Carol Edic, and Walter and Janice Edic; sisters-in-law, Denise Edic, Shirley Edic, and Nancy Yeager; many beloved nieces and nephews, especially acknowledging Godchildren, Brittany Shields and Thomas Vivacqua; Goddaughters, Jennifer Rech and Elizabeth Sergott – also loved as a daughter, and their mother, Karen Czerkies; and dear friends, Jennifer Blue, Sylvia Roch and Russell Blue, and their children, Das Jordan Blue, Reilley Blue, and Nathaniel Blue.
Pete was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Francis, and James Edic; brothers-in-law, Ronald Alexander and Fred Vivacqua; nephew, Michael Vivacqua; and great-nephew, Vincent Vivacqua.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 12 Noon, at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Campus. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m., at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Rahul Seth, Jessica Eno, PA, and their team at the Upstate Cancer Center, for their care and compassion during Pete's illness. Additional thanks to the late Fr. Mark Pasik for spiritual accompaniment in the early years of Pete's Christian walk and to Fr. Jason Hage for his spiritual guidance and friendship to Pete over the past several years. Pete also extends his gratefulness to G.E. colleagues, Debra-Jane and Paul FitzGerald, and Diane and Gary Strong; to his SUNY colleagues, Eileen and Mike Medley; and to his co-parishioners, Ed Gunn, Mary Kogut, and Doug and Sheila Ambrose. Never underestimate the value of a solitary prayer, a kind word, a gentle smile, or a warm embrace. Each person listed here never did!
